The most overrated fighters in MMA list My personal picks and reasons -Ronda Rousey - Yes she is exceptionally skilled at Judo and achieved a lot and was a pioneer, but most of her opponents were soccer moms and part time fighters. When she fought someone of elite caliber, she was destroyed back to back -Conor Mcgregor - This one is tricky. On one hand you have nuthuggers who think he is the greatest of all time because he won 2 belts. On the other, many call him a chicken and fraud and overhyped because he tapped to nate and Khabib. I think he is a decent, top 3 GOAT at FW, but putting him in the overall GOAT list is absurd. -Paulo Costa - not many rate him high these days anyway -Francis Ngannou - He is one of the hardest hitters and scariest dudes around, but I don't think he is a complete fighter with elite skill. Take away his power and I doubt he would make the top 5 at HW. But I love the dude and the way he fights Who do you guys pick?
Ngannou, probably. He was hyped as a living car accident for his opponents yet anybody with eyes could see that his whole game is essentially POWER. Anybody world class with a varied skillset was going to give him trouble. I think Dana saw how marketable he was and hyped the crap out of him.
I probably need to think about this one from a more historical context, but I feel Masvidal belongs somewhere on this list. So many fans talk about him like he's this elite fighter and why? Because he knocked out Askren, who never proved anything at the highest level, and beat a good but overrated Darren Till. The Cerrone win was okay, but we all know that he was on the decline at that point despite looking good in the Iaquinta, Perry and Alexander Hernandez fights. Besides, welterweight was never Cerrones' weight class. Beating Diaz at that stage of his career proves absolutely nothing, and we all know it. Masvidal was utterly embarrassed by Stephen Thompsons' striking skills. Complete mismatch in terms of skills. Toby Imada turned him into a blueberry. Demian Maia and Kamaru Usman completely neutralized him. Every time the dude had a competitive fight, he claimed that he was robbed. Maybe a few of those could have gone his way, but it's just the Diaz brothers. According to them, they never lost a fight. I'm not saying he completely sucks. He's a decent fighter. But he was never what so many fans pretend he is.
Khabib has dominated everyone he has fought and dominated an elite fighter like Conor, I feel you should wait until his next match to decide if he is the most overrated fighter in history.
Wonderboy completely schooled Masvidal. There is a reason Masvidal is so reluctant to fight leon Edwards/Colby and begs for another rubbish Nate Diva Diaz fight that no one is interested in. Masvidal is a crafty all round veteran fighter but definately not as good as all the hype imo.
Yeah that fight gets forgotten but ive watched a few times and the 30-27 cards from all 3 judges for Khabib were bull**** and Tibau deserved to win at least 1 round with quite a few people like yourself thinking he lost, which is very reasonable
Reluctant to fight Edwards/colby? that's not true at all he has never knocked back those fights and Edwards got removed from rankings because he keeps knocking back fights including Wonderboy which would seem the most obvious fight for him since Masvidal is fighting Colby and it seems clear he wants no part of Chimaev.
I'm not the biggest fan of hers but all of Ronda's opponents amassed a decent record later in their career. All of her opponents have their own wikipedia page(https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ronda_Rousey because they were all decent fighters. She beat an Olympian wrestler , a future champion(tate) twice(Tate went on to beat Holm,) and beat two kickboxers turned mma with a combine kickboxing record of 20-3 . She never faced any fighter that ended their career negative. I don't see any part time soccer mom. I think even in todays division she would make top 5.
You know, I just thought about it. What about Chuck Liddell? Now, I know that his resume was very deep. He beat Sobral (x2), Overeem, Belfort, Busamante, Mezger, Randleman, Ortiz (x2), Couture (x2), Horn (x2) and Wanderlei. But there was never a single time that he was the definitive #1 light heavyweight in the world. When he fought in the PRIDE tournament, he got wrecked. Overeem was beating his ass before Chuck's toughness and power came through for him, and then Quinton just beat him like he stole something. Later on, Quinton knocked him out again in pretty effortless fashion. Mauricio Rua, Rich Franklin and Rashad Evans all put him to sleep as well. Hell, Randy beat him down dominantly in their first fight. Plus, we all know that Wanderlei was never the same after Dan Henderson and Mirko knocked him out, so that win was worth less than Ali's third fight with Frazier for example. I'm not trying to disparage the man because he had a fine career that went too long and he took way too much damage on his way out. He was never afraid to fight the best, and he did accomplish quite a bit over a long period of time. He was always ONE of the best light heavy weights in the world. But consider how famous Chuck Liddell during the initial MMA explosion after the first Ultimate Fighter. He was the face of MMA for a long time, and he was considered by most to be the best in the sport pound-for-pound. Granted, most of these people were casual fans who had no idea what PRIDE even was, yet alone knew about guys like Shogun, Wanderlei and Quinton. So a lot of that overrated sentiment came from ignorance, but still, I think it applies. He might be the most overrated fighter in mma history when you really think about it.
