James Toney vs. Bernard Hopkins @ 160 pounds

Particulars: 12 rounds. Ten-point must scoring for the rounds, 20x20 ring. Assume both fighters are in their primes.

This would be an interesting fight.

In my opinion, Toney would have to be the aggressor as Hopkins defense, superior range height, and jab would better Toney in the middle of the ring rather easily. Hopkins was not the type to corner without paying for it, as he had a counter of his own, plus some dirty tactics if needed up close.

The chance for a stoppage either way would be slim.

I see it, Hopkins via UD by 4-5 rounds. Vote in the poll or even better pick the winner with observations and reasoning here.

PS: Had this fight happened, I would be rooting for James Toney.

Care to give us some details as to why you think Toney would win? Its a pretty easy case for Hopkins, but I'll hold back on what I will be saying until later.

 

You have no details, of facts to back up your pick. I on the other hand have some. Disagree, then produce them. I don't think a pick for Toney is unreasonable, but I do think he was better overall.

I highly doubt this will be an 80 page thread. My guess is most here are fans of both, not one or the other.

This is a good fantasy match up that never happened.

 

I agree with your pick of Hopkins over GGG. I argue with your analysis that Toney didn't like to lead, so what can't GGG who had a really good jab do the same to Toney, and back it up with better firepower than Hopkins can dream of?

I still think this a good match up. Too bad it never happened.

 

This is an interesting thread. I like it. The polling is close, and so far the comments on why a person is making a pick are also good.

If I wanted to pan Toney ( I would root from him over Hopkins ) I'd do a full break down on his fight with Roy Jones.

That's exactly right. I do not like Hopkins, but like you said he was winner in many title defenses @ 160, didn't have judges bail him out, or performance that his fans need to excuse. He was the older fighter fighting younger guys. Hopkins to me has the styles match up here, and the higher boxing IQ. Bernard was a very smart fighter, tough fighter. I find him work as a commentator to be spot on.

 

More like I spent time panning his fanboys. Any pick or comments about boxing in this thread?
