In his prime Martin Murray was a world level middleweight. He should have been a world champion. For the majority of his early to mid career he didn’t have that big promoter or manager behind him who could set him up with a title shot on home soil. He had to travel to Germany to get done on the cards against Sturm (draw). He had to travel to Argentina to get screwed over by their officials. He travelled to Monte Carlo to get absolutely smashed for 11 rounds by a prime, elite level GGG when previous fighters hadn’t lasted more than a handful of rounds. He had to travel to fight Abraham...admittedly, he didn’t do enough in that fight. By the time he got Eddie behind him he had very little left after taking a tonking off George Groves. After that, Murray has been a spent force.

I posted all that as a reminder that he was a quality operator and a very tough, honest lad. However, he’s been retired since the N’Dam fight. He’s had a couple of knocks ‘for a bit of fun’ at the Olympia in Liverpool against a couple of puddings. He had absolutely no aspirations or hopes of being in anymore remotely competitive fights until BJS offered him a fight a year or two back. It’s just incredible that it’s now been put back on the table and he has another shot at a world title. It’s just a shame that he has hardly anything left and BJS gets to do a Eubank Jn and feast on a ‘name’ that’s shot to ribbons.

BJS is a disgrace. It doesn’t matter how technically excellent he is, he’s wasted his talent.

You overrate Murray. He was quite simply an incredibly tough man with an iron chin, that's the biggest thing he had in his armoury. No power and average boxing ability really. He was never world champ because it was never his level. Very good European level operator IMO.

No, I tend to side with 20. Murray was more than euro lvl. That night against Martinez and sturm puts him at fringe world level for me. But if he had a bit more of a dig on him then he could of made it to the top imo.

My mate knows Murray, same age from the same area. Says he is an absolute see your next Tuesday. Total bully in and around the town.

Even he wants Murray to beat BJS and I’m not kidding!

That’s not been my experience, and not heard any negativity about him around the area either.

Brilliant post, spot on m8. Glad Jamie Moore is in his corner as he is a compassionate trainer and I can see him pulling him out after 5 or 6. BJS is not a big puncher but I think he will land at will and that will take its toll unfortunately.

I'm not going to lie, I've heard plenty of bad things about Murray but that's because of what he was like in his early years and no doubt why he couldn't get proper backing. He wasn't allowed into the States because of his criminal convictions which is why he never fought there and why he couldn't go over to watch Fielding vs Alvarez. That said I can't argue with anything Twenty said, he's right, Murray was, for a time, World level and he beat an ATG in Martinez, however shot Martinez may have been, we all know that he deserved to be a World Champion that night but if he became one he was limited to what he could do because he couldn't fight in the States.

Was just thinking, how many fights has Saunders pulled out of?

He was effectively banned for Andrade. Pulled out of Murray fight twice I think? Pulled out of Bursak fight. Sure there was a couple of others as well?

He was due to fight that midget lunatic from Georgia who got jailed for about 20 years.

He was also due to fight DeGale at one point.
