I honestly don't think Selby will be getting a gift on cards if he loses a competitive fight, not given the drama with Ritson - Vasquez recently.
I'm expecting very much safety first from Selby, it's time to turn it in after this. It's brilliant that he became a World Champion given his background and if the Warrington fight was when it should have been, when Selby could still look semi normal making weight, things could be looking very different, he's got to accept that it's over now though.
What is his background out of interest? Is he a traveler?. I've seen some interviews of his old man and he looks like Diego Maradonna.
He was just a young weed smoking down and out from Barry with a dad that was into boxing. There was a documentary on him after he became IBF champion and you saw all his mates struggling but he was still the same Lee Selby they grew up with, just a clean living one. He's really into breeding ferrets and dogs and I think that's what he wants to do when he retires. I also recall him saying that when his fight at the MGM Grand was cancelled he lost a load of money because he'd paid for his mates to come out there for it. No glittering amateur background, no Olympic record, no big backing, just a slightly wayward kid from a run down town going on to become a World Champion, it's cliche but I like it.
Time to hang them up. On another night he may have got the decision but he's not going to be troubling the best at that weight so I don't think there's anything more that we need to see. Lee has done his family and Barry Town proud, I alluded to it above but he's come from nothing, been a World Champion, made a bit of money and still has his brain, family and other interests outside of boxing to keep him busy.
Yep time for Lee to have a long think about hanging them up I would think, that Warrington fight took a lot out of him IMO. Fantastic ambassador for Welsh boxing and a really talented fighter who’s had a great career.
I agree with the retirement talk. I thought he won that fight quite clearly last night...I’m starting to question my own ability to score a fight though after seeing what others have said. He completely controlled it, and kept the other fella’s successes to the odd single shot. That said, he’s lost a step and doesn’t have the pop to even keep an opponent honest never mind wobble them. When you see the Leo Santa Cruz’s and Lopez’s of this world moving up through the weights it baffles me when most of our lads stay at one weight for almost all their career.
