Man, that stoppage called by Steele two seconds before the bout's end...who would was leading on the scorecards?

Yes, Taylor was up on two of the judges scorecards. One had Chavez winning. Would’ve been a split decision for Taylor.

Taylor was up seven points on one official card and five points on another going into the last round. So, even with the knockdown, he would've won a split decision.

    Yep.

That's why there was high controversy.

I remember that fight on March 17 1990, I set the timer on my VCR, I worked the graveyard shift back then. When I returned home that morning, I watched it, I truly believe that had the fight continued, Meldrick Taylor would have won by unanimous decision, I had him ahead on my scorecard. As much as I really admired Julio Caesar Chavez, he was getting beaten. Taylor though suffered damage to his face, broken cheek bone. But referee Richard Steele was concerned at the damage that Taylor was suffering I suppose.

Had it been a 15 round fight, there wouldn't have been any controversy. Of course, had it been 15 rounds, maybe Taylor would have paced himself differently...
But in terms of the 12 round limit, the cards are clear that Taylor would have won on a split decision.

I remember Tayler being way ahead. I wish he just would have answered the refs question and finished the last few seconds and won. I never really cared for Chavez

Do you think it's possible Richard Steele was paid off and the fight was fixed?

Not every fight is fixed, that sounds like a politician's projection. What Fergy said was correct, Taylor was never the same again, they both fought their heart out in that very great match. Meldrick spoke as if he had suffered a stroke after that match, he did suffer facial damage to his facial bones. Julio Caesar Chavez continued with his legendary career, suffering a loss for the first time against Frankie The Surgeon Randall. on Jan 29 1994 by unanimous decision, losing his title. He would avenge his loss to Randall in the return bout.

Thank You, I appreciate it. Referee Steele was looking out for the best interest of the injured fighter who was Meldrick Taylor. There was no fix in this fight, there is always accusations whenever a fighter loses. I know that there was something like 3 seconds left, but why would anybody want to have that on their conscience for the rest of their life, that a fatal injury could have been avoided.

Good insight. Interestingly, I heard George W. Bush had a hand in Michalczewski losing to Gonzalez and falling to 48-1 so he wouldn't tie the great Rocky's (USA) 49-0 mark as a world champ.

@The Morlocks Michalczewski-Gonzalez was in 2003 so not far removed from the 90s.
