Not to mention Kenny Norton brought his own awkwardness that worked in his favor. Wlad would be a more dangerous opponent for Norton. He has real power and was quicker, better technique. He matches up better with Norton.

I can see an argument for either. Norton is more proven of course.

Who?

It's a miserable level of competition defeated for a top line heavyweight. The highest ranked opponent he beat was Samuel Peter. That's miserable. Imagine the fun you would have if Joe Fraziers best victory was over a fighter like Sam Peter

How on Earth is Norton more proven when he never achieved anything as significant as Vitali ?!??
Vitali will mop the floor with him.

I think Norton is more skilled than Peter and Sanders.

Right but he has is the heart and will. Vitali did quit against Byrd so to me there are still some question marks there

Fair enough.

Norton's way too good for both of them, in my opinion, and Peter in particular, whose power is really quite overrated. I doubt Peter could trouble Norton at all.

He does not have a record of landing anything significant on top-tier opponents. A chinny, unfit and aged Maskaev is his only stoppage win of note.

If Ali is out, what is Frazier's best win? Frazier is 1-5 vs Ali and Foreman. If you have to crap on 9 beaten RIng Magazine ranked contenders, which Vitali clearly outclassed so be it. Injuries in fights he was winning that he also took on 2 weeks notice define Vitali's defeats.

Peter was a top guy for a while, better than say Galento who floored Louis or B Bear who did the same. :) If you watch him, he was actually a decent boxer with a solid jab. He gave Wlad a fighter you rate highly ( Top 20 of all time ) a tough first fight, out boxed Toney on Roids twice, Ko'd Maskeav, and beat McCline. Vitlai whipped peter.

I think I'll close with your words on Vitali. Sit down again....

Yeah, i stand by all these words. Is some weird thing where you think you've scored a point by saying things I believe like I don't believe them? He was pretty special.

Resume is pretty awful though, for a top line heavyweight.

Who are the men Ring ranked when Vitali faced them?

Ach, probably impossible to get him to answer. Typing those names would make him sad.

Vitali did pretty good work in terms of meeting top ten contenders, I actually think it is more than eight, but he has a pretty horrible record against top 5 and he never bothered to match the best available. Overall, it makes it extremely difficult because he tended to look imperious against good opposition and tended not to bother with elite opposition.

Once you consider he couldn't beat Lewis or Byrd (Whatever the reason) who are the elite opponents he faced, it makes i a bit uncomfy, picking him over the very best. Other guys in the top 30 at the weight (excluding guys like Fitzsimmons). It just makes me a bit twitchy.

Povetkin, Chagaev, Haye, even Ruiz (though maybe not) were the elite guys he just didn't seem to want to bother with. When you think about how much more a fight with Povetkin or Chagaev would have told us, it is a shame to say the least.

0-2 versus the elites is never going to make for good reading, whatever the spin. And Peter just isn't good enough to make it 1-2.

Who are the men Ring ranked when Vitali faced them you ask?

How many heavyweights have more than 9 ring magazine ranked opponents beaten? You tell me MCGrain? I would say very few.

We have been over this before. I'll take time out to do it right. Here's what I came up with.

• 04/01/2000 - RTD by 9 Chris Byrd (#10 at Heavyweight) - Torn shoulder, way up on the cards.
• 06/21/2003 - TKO by 6 Lennox Lewis (Champion at Heavyweight) - Cuts, up 4-2 on all cards
• 04/24/2004 - TKO8 Corrie Sanders (#3 at Heavyweight)
• 12/11/2004 - TKO8 Danny Williams (#9 at Heavyweight)
• 10/11/2008 - RTD8 Sam Peter (#2 at Heavyweight)
• 03/21/2009 - TKO9 Juan Carlos Gomez (#9 at Heavyweight)
• 09/26/2009 - RTD10 Chris Arreola (#6 at Heavyweight)
• 12/12/2009 - UD12 Kevin Johnson (#10 at Heavyweight)
• 03/19/2011 - KO1 Odlanier Solis ( #9 at Heavyweight )
• 09/10/2011 - TKO10 Tomasz Adamek (#2 at Heavyweight )
•
This content is protected
- TKO 2 Kirk Johnson ( #8 at heavyweight ) - Source Ring Magazine 2003 May issue
• Hide?? - Probably not, but there is a chance he was

Vitali also has wins over a former lineal champion in Briggs, a WBO belt holders in Hide ( who might have been ranked as he had the WBO belt ) , and previously ranked contenders in Larry Donald. I'm not sure if Vaughn Bean was ever ranked in the top ten, but he did get two lineal title shots from Moorer and Holyfield who took him the distance. Vitali knocked Bean out, and dominated him on the score cards.

I think I will save this thread. Any disagreement, please let me know. This is not the deepest resume, but it's far as bad as you're making it out to be. Key point, Vitali was dominating in all of his wins and ahead in his two injury losses.
