Not really, he had Povetkin hurt a few time, stopped Ustinov, stopped Maldonado (who went the distance with Rivas before and with Takam afterwards) and stopped Bakole. While I wouldn't call him a huge puncher, he has the power to hurt someone, has a great killer instinct and good timing and accuracy.
Underrated, are you joking? He's consistently overrated by this forum. The ironic thing is that Oleksandr Usyk is underrated. Oleksandr Usyk is consistently labelled "too small" for heavyweight. He's taller than Michael Hunter and isn't fat like Michael Hunter. He's a bigger guy. I don't see many people calling Michael Hunter too small. Michael Hunter was lucky that the knockdown he suffered versus Alexander Povetkin wasn't called - clearly held up by the ropes. He lost that fight, started well and then soon gassed by the 6th round. He won't do much at heavyweight.
Relax mate. I didn’t mention either Usyk or Povetkin, smasher is I agree with you on both points. So calm the vibe. Hunter still beats old man Ortiz.
There's a difference in expectations though between the two. Nobody is expecting Hunter to become the "Man" at heavyweight, he was underrated. He was just seen as the kid of Mike "The Bounty" Hunter who lost to Usyk. But fact is he's proven he's capable at operating at world level at heavyweight despite his small size, personally I had him beating Povetkin. With Usyk people's expectations are much higher, anything less than becoming the dominant heavyweight champion would be seen as a failure because we know he is a special fighter. The fact Hunter is now seen as a good heavyweight and Usyk beat him only adds to Usyk's reputation, so saying Hunter is overrated is saying Usyk's win over him is overrated which is odd when you're saying Usyk is underrated.
To be fair he should have had a tko win over Wilder in the first fight. Wilder was protected far too much. Could have easily been waived off. So we can conclude that Ortiz is high level. He made Wilder go beyond anyone else except Fury.
While I agree he's high level or at least seems it so, basing it on the Wilder performance is a little weak as an argument as Wilder's best win is who? Ortiz right. So Wilder is good because he beat Ortiz, Ortiz is good because he should of maybe beat Wilder. That's a prime example of circular reasoning which creates logical fallacies.
Please. He earned his hype. Ortiz absolutely obliterated Jennings, who had just given Wladimir a surprisingly competitive fight. Ortiz then demolished Thompson with no trouble at all. Those were eye opening performances. You don´t just run through those guys like that, if you are not any good. Even in defeat against Wilder, he showed his skills. But Wilder proved that he is not among the very top of the division. But as soon as Ortiz takes a step down in opposition(Hammer and Kauffman), he wins with relative ease. Ortiz is clearly better than the average B level contender. His best win is Jennings and you might laugh at that, but it highlights just perfectly where Ortiz stands. Good enough to maybe crack the top 10. Now his popularity due to his two high profile fights with Wilder, is seen as some unwarranted hype. It is not.
Leave Ortiz alone, he waited a long time for his title shots and he deserves another. Let's remember, he fought in WWI for people like us and then he was frozen out by Jack Dempsey, it's about time we put some respek on his name.
People overrating Hunter to prop up Usyk/Pov and/or underrating Ortiz to diminish Wilder. Sigh. This board never learns. It's always "this guy obliterates this guy!, no chance!". There's literally not much to base these extreme opinions of Ortiz getting battered by Pov/Hunter. He's dominated all of his opponents, except Wilder, who he outboxed. He's a bit of a question mark because he hasn't fought anyone else.
Wilder is a puncher who can’t box. Hunter is a good boxer. So the fact Ortiz outboxed Wilder (whilst tiring himself out and getting KO’d) is of little relevance here I think. Hunter wins this one, and easily
Hunter might decision Ortiz but he's really not that much at heavyweight. Wouldn't surprise me if the old man sparked him out.
