Will Usyk wait for his chance or will he fight just for 1 belt?

I'm curious to hear some opinions on this. Oleksandr Usyk said after his victory over Chisora that he will not take step-aside money and that he wants the fight with AJ (or for the vacant WBO belt) over anything else.

Do you guys think that he can be convinced with a large enough sum or is his stance unbreakable? And if so, do you think he's making the right choice?

I'm taking him at his word so I believe what he's saying but I don't know if he's choosing what's best for his career. He could just wait for the winner of AJ-Fury for a chance at becoming Undisputed again, this time in Heavyweight. It seems like the most reasonable path to me.

It's tough to be undisputed these days. Might as well take a fight while it's there.

 

I don’t think he can be convinced. Usyk is smart and knows the only leverage he has is to force Joshua’s hand and make the fight as soon as possible or make Joshua vacate.

Taking a step aside agreement is always very risky and even moreso during a pandemic when sports could get completely shut down again at anytime. Not to mention Usyk will be 34 in January so he’s too old to be stepping aside. Stepping aside would just result in him throwing away a year.

Also, once Joshua and Hearn get Usyk to step aside for a Fury-Joshua fight Hearn being the cunning promoter that he is wouldn’t have any reason to honor the agreement with Usyk. Hearn would find a way to weasel out of it like he did with Ortiz, who stepped aside for Wlad-Joshua, but had nothing to show for it.

 

The way you phrased the poll is a bit confusing, but there is no doubt whatsoever that he will force a vacancy and fight for the WBO belt.

 

Usyk should force it as much as he can. No way should he sit around for 18 months to wait for a vacant title shot.

If he takes the money he will be accused of selling out, having no ambition, not "daring to be great"..


So Usyk has zero choice but to push this as far as he can and hopefully he gets his shot next.

For his own good, he should enforce to fight straight away and Joshua either got to fight or be stripped, than Usyk will fight with someone lesser for the title. This is his best bet for sure. Not only that, but his best option. He will be a champion and will get into the negotiation with better cards in his hands.
Also he will have 1 more fight, which will be good, cause he was sidelined for way too long.

 

I hope so, but it may be dubois vs Usyk which would **** me off.

 

Of course he will take the WBO shot. If he steps aside, there's no certainty that he's actually gets it later and he has to wait too long.
If he fights for the vacant WBO and wins, he probably gets the Joshua fight anyway, because he has one of the belts.

 

Usyk knows he doesn't have a big chance against Fury or AJ so he'll just try to cash out against either one of them.

 

I'd be surprised if he stepped aside, for all the reasons mentioned.
But I think he also knows AJ is more beatable than Fury, particularly for his style. So if Fury beats AJ twice and then Usyk gets his shot, Usyk might have less chance of becoming a HW champ even though he'd get all the belts at once if he won.

He will likely get an extra tick up on his pay to fight for a vacant or "regular" title.

 

If Joshua wins against Pulev, yes, I believe Joshua will fight Usyk next.

Eddie Hearn had insisted for years that the WBC champ fight Whyte. When Whyte lost to Povetkin, Hearn got British fans all worked up again about a possible unification (this time with Fury and Joshua).

But Joshua doesn't want to vacate one of his belts, and he doesn't want to fight Fury if Fury doesn't have a belt. The goal has always been to win them all.

And the WBC reiterated a few weeks ago that if Whyte wins the return with Povetkin in January, then the Fury-Wilder III winner has to fight Whyte next. (And Hearn will be all over that.)

So, Joshua (if he beats Pulev) will fight Usyk in April or May so he can keep all the belts he still has.
