I do think that Donald Curry was so consumed with a possible title bout on the horizon against Marvelous Marvin Hagler that he overlooked Lloyd Honeyghan, who fought a great night in winning the title on the night of Sept 21 1986.The Hagler bout would have been great for Curry, especially that he was a television superstar and his problems making weight at 147 lbs, but that is what happens when you do not prepare and focus on your opponents. As a champion, you have a large target on your back, it is best to always be prepared.
When I think of that fight, I don't think so much of Curry quitting in his corner as I think of him just not having it that night and losing badly. He seemed beaten pretty much from the beginning.
He dont seem too bad to me Thats Don just a laid back Texas guy. I remember his career trainer, from peewee to world champion,Paul Reyes saying " I swear Don had radar he knew punches were coming before his opponent threw them . He actually wanted to play baseball & turned pro just to make enough $$$ for college but he just kept on winning. Another great fighter & nice guy
Sacharin Ray stabbed Don in the back when he was supposed to be retired & acting as Don's "advisor" Don wanted to challenge Hagler, Leonard talked him out of it while all the time secretly negociating to fight Hagler himself. The first Dave Gorman knew was when the fight was announced Leonard is a snake in the grass. If you notice he rarely visits Texas they dont want him there
I think Leonard advised him well. Curry got beaten to a pulp by Lloyd Honeyghan 1986. Knocked cold with one shot by Mike McCallum in 1987. Outboxed by Rene Jacquot in 1989. Knocked out by Michael Nunn in 1990. Knocked out by Terry Norris in 1991. Curry got beaten convincingly nearly every year he fought after winning against McCrory - who was no Hagler. I've gotten into long arguments about Curry. And I'm not anymore. He just clearly was not as good as people thought he was. And Curry should be thanking Leonard to this day Donald Curry didn't freaking fight Marvin Hagler, if Lloyd Honeyghan and Rene Jacquot were beating his ass. (LOL) Hagler coming off the Hearns destruction against the Donald Curry would've been criminal. Luckily, he's enjoying retirement. Good luck to him.
It would have been great to have an eliminator, Donald Curry vs Sugar Ray Leonard, the winner faces Marvelous Marvin Hagler.
That snake in the grass Leonard wasnt thinking of Don when he stabbed him in the back he was after the $$$$$$$ he wisely stayed away from Texas after he robbed Marvin too He even did it again against Camacho Leonard wasnt there to try to win he just wanted the paycheck. Don was going to challenge him but after he saw how pathetic Leonard was Don said he wouldnt embarrass himself by getting in the ring with him
Don would have loved to get him in the ring Leonard was supposedly retired due to a detached retina he claimed
Hagler-Leonard was a "Super Fight" people waited five years to see. And it was a HUGE success. The fact that Curry or anyone from "Texas" is mad those two guys fought each other (instead of Curry) is comical. Curry couldn't last six rounds with Honeyghan. Curry got wasted with one shot by McCallum. Where the hell was Curry's "radar" those nights? (LOL) It's pure fantasy. It's like Amir Khan complaining when Mayweather and Pacquiao fought, saying it should've been him, instead. It's a joke. Hell, it's a bigger joke than that example.
