I remember Leonard sparring with another Texas friend & former WBC middleweight champ Quincy Taylor. Quincy nailed him & Leonard admitted himself he was knocked out on his feet. They stoped the sparring & Leonard wouldnt spar Quincy any more. Quincy apparantly said " That one was for Don " lol

Donald had the flu before the Honeyghan fight & was overweight due to not being able to train. He spent hours in the sauna trying to lose weight Both Dave & Paul wanted to pull Don out but Akhbar Muhammad insisted he fought. Don was weak as a kitten that night. He didnt have a chance but credit to Honeyghan he took full advantage not his fault

And, if Donald would've fought Hagler that night, he'd have still had the flu, right?

It's not like he wouldn't have gotten the flu if he was fighting someone else ... right?

You can't get stopped by a Honeyghan (Curry) or a Danny Garcia (Khan) ... and then complain when the biggest superfight in years is announced and you aren't included.

Leonard-Hagler was a monster fight YEARS in the making.

When Leonard was available, Curry was never seriously in the running.

Just like when Mayweather or Pac were available to fight each other, Khan was never going to get selected over the other.

There is something I really do not understand about the whole thing. Is the thinking by Donald that Ray got close to Donald to keep him away from Hagler in 1986 so Hagler would be ready for Ray to fight him inactive in 1987? Because if Hagler had the choice to fight Ray or Donald, Marvin would naturally fight Ray. Easy decision. Why would Ray have to steer Donald away from Marvin? And the fight with Mugabi and Marvin being rusty is what made Ray come back and want to fight Marvin as that Maryland TV station interview was in May only two months later. And that fight was scheduled for awhile since the original date of Hagler/Mugabi and Hearns/Shuler was Nov., and then Marvin got an injury. So it was rescheduled for March 10, 1986 -so Marvin was already busy, and if Ray needed only two months to make that announcement, how is Donald's ideas valid? Donald says he wants to fight Marvin and Marvin cancels the Mugabi card and fights him? Unlikely.

So, Are they saying Donald wanted to fight Marvin prior to when Ray was ready and to keep Marvin inactive so he would be ready for Ray to beat Marvin and not let Donald fight and beat Marvin and Ray was not truthful. That Ray thought Marvin was weakened and diminished and had it all planned?

I always thought Marvin wanted the greats in that class of Duran, Hearns and Leonard, but that he did not want to fight the Currys or Nunns or Benns. He wanted to fight his generation tops but not the new one, and it seems like Duran and Hearns and Leonard felt the same way since they did not fight the newer generation either. They pretty much stuck to each other. My thinking is Ray's advice was right. Donald was better at the lower weights.
As for Marvin against Donald. Donald was a great counterpuncher, but he could not hurt Marvin and he didn't have great lateral movement in my mind so as we saw with Lloyd and McCallum Donald would have eventually been in front of Marvin and probably lost by late round knockout.
Donald could move and back up, but not to win rounds, more to adjust and get angles.

He certainly couldn`t have taken a strong middleweights power and Hagler was a killer in there.

Hagler`s long jab would have been too much for Curry, he wa nevder proven at 160 and couldn`t take Curry or McCallum`s power at the lighter weights, if Lloyd could hurt him then HAgler would have destroyed him.

Leonard stopped Hearns and Lalonde, Pryor nevder had that kind of power, Ray would have destroyed all of Pryor`s opponents because he was naturally bigger.

The issue with all that is...any Curry follower can see that that was a carcass a zombie in the ring that night....its easy to talk about plan B but we didnt even see a plan A or half of one...we just saw a distracted weight drained burned out zombie not punching or moving or fighting like usual.....this was also the consensus expert opinion at the time whether that be HBO,the East coast hacks,or former foes like Marlon Starling.....that was not the Curry we had seen.marlon said " honeyghan beat don curry on a night any 1 in the world could have beat don curry"

The McCallum defeat is more straightforward ...that was the donald curry of 1987 beaten fair and square. After the beating against Honeyghan everyone wanted to billygoat butt Curry...and Curry started to neglect his brilliant defence and lead with his face... he was doing v well but mike set him up and knocked him out.

Because it was such a huge upset, that's what everyone was focusing on just the fact that Honeyghan beat Curry and it was a huge shock

A 100 % Curry would have beaten Honeyghan that night.
Would Don have beaten Marvin? Now thats a different story but he deserved the chance. That snake in the grass Leonard robbed him of that chance. I'm sure Don would have given a good account of himself tho.
That scumbag knew to stay away from Texas over it didnt he
Oh BTW Marvin BEAT LEONARD too but got screwed

Well the thing was he did great when he was on top. The headbutting incident with those two fights before McCallum had a lot to do with Donald not moving much and standing in front of his opponents. If a head can hit him that clean a punch certainly can.
