Imagine going to a division that has Juan Manuel Marquez on one side, Manny Pacquiao on the other, and thinking, "You know, I think Joan Guzman is the best Super Featherweight in the world."
As talented as Guzman was, he was also very inconsistent. Not to mention his weight issues. I got a headache reading some of that crap from Ra!! NTM, Guzman didn't win a belt (WBO) until 09/2006. Pac already had a title before that.
No dude, I don't think homophobia is the way to go. I mean, I know you're German and all, but try not to dehumanize people based on religious or sexual preferences. But, you think you may want to click that link I sent you? The one in response to when I said beating Cotto didn't make Pacquiao lineal at Welterweight? I'll...I'll give you a hint. It was after Floyd retired. But you're doing good dude, doing good.
This is coming from a guy who said "Guinness Book of World Records don't recognize the Ring titles! Where's your evidence huh? huh?!" and plain as day on their website, "Manny Pacquaio's an eight-division world champion." It's like he thinks no one will bother to check up on his bull****. Although, I'm starting to think that maaaaaa~ybe the block function you mentioned isn't such a bad idea after all.
I wasn't even talking about specific titles. Just the fact that you think Joan Guzman was #1 at 130 then. He never was.
5 Lineal championships is Pac's best accomplishment by far. imo, especially given that they span from Flyweight to Welterweight and include three of the O8. Might be a while before someone equals that number, even taking into account a proliferation of belts and the possibility of new weight divisions.
I mean, the Guzman that basically shut out Humberto Soto in Nov 2007 might well have been a tough out for JMM and Pac based on styles match-up. But even if you think he was the best 130lb fighter in the world at that point, he never fought in the division after that, so JMM and Pac were still vying for the lineal championship when they met in their second fight.
people need to forget belts when assessing a fighter's career. 1. there are too many of them. 2. you don't have to fight the best in a division to win one. and 3. a fighter like manny stands just fine on his resume and accomplishments without having to add watered-down belts, offered by self-indulgent federations.
At the rate we're going they're going to have a belt at every 2 lb increment. "I'm a multi division champion! I went from 180 all the way to 190! That's 6 divisions!"
Broner managed to win a few and skipped over 140 where he could have preyed one. Robert Guerrero has titles and interim titles in 3 or 4 spanning 5 divisions. WBC Diamond, WBA regular, all that nonsense further complicates. Titles ultimately mean nothing. It is all about the opponent. Sanctioning bodies strip guys for taking would-be unifications or fighting a guy clearly better than their mandatory all the time. Who cares? The win is as good as the win is; IBO or WBA super-duper regardless.
How did a starving child knockout the best Flyweight in the world? The man he knocked out for the 112 pound title beat the best Flyweight of the generation to become lineal. Pac beat the man who beat an ATG. Pac was hungry, but starving or not he beat the man at Flyweight. He wasn't just able to make 112. He beat the man viciously.
