Dempsey Or Liston?

Dempsey eventually uses liston for target practice

 

Liston would absolutely annihilate Dempsey but Jack is a more important figure in the sport.

Dempsey never faced anything remotely like a Sonny Liston, a skilled boxer with more power than anyone of Jack's age, a full arsenal of punches, balance, an iron jaw and one of the hallmark jabs in the division's history.

Sounds precisely like the type (and complexion) that Jack avoided.

Yeah, that was a great bout they had. A real high point on Jack's record. Took a lot of guts for him to sign for it.

 

Dempsey for historical importance but head to head I have Sonny and his brutal jab winning.

 

So Willard was on Liston's level??

 

Liston had twenty pounds and an 11 inch reach advantage and he would ram that telephone poll jab into Dempseys face all night. Can’t see Dempsey winning this one.

 

I have Dempsey ranked higher. Head to head, Liston has the style and tools to make it one hell of a fight for a few rounds. Dempsey might even visit the canvas. As the fight goes on, Dempsey starts taking over. Dempsey gets the TKO in about round seven, IMO.

 

I like Dempsey in a lot of hypothetical matchups probably more than most people, however this ain't one of them. He gets ko'ed after landing some good bombs on Sonny.
