I think Cassius clay Aka Ali vs Louis is the most interesting boxing phantasy match up of all time. Two of the very best boxers of all time. But some fans with little knowledge says this is a complete mismatch. 1- People always complain abouy different eras can't be compared but the fact is that Louis and Ali era's were very close. Louis last fight was in late 1951, Ali started in 1960 only 9 YEARS LATER 2- Ali competition was superior to Louis, yeah but its not Louis fault 3- Some People say Ali was too big for louis and that's wrong Both guys had similar frames Ali was only an inch taller, and 5-10 pounds heavier in his prime. In fact Ali faced many guys that were way smaller than a young Joe Louis In my mind Ali has the edge in this fight because his superior footwork but Louis could absolutely win. It would be very competitive ... 24 years old Ali the same who destroyed Cleveland williams vs 24 years old Joe louis who knocked Schmelling in their second bout
I have never thought about this really, but I'm glad u brought it up. I think u have a lot of good points.
I've been saying this. Louis has all the tools to beat Ali. The only flaw I see that will work against him is his lack of foot work. This could be a huge deciding factor in the outcome of the fight, but Louis still has a good chance of winning.
Louis's peak years were 1938-42 and Ali's peak was 1964-67 so i do think their eras were quite far apart if you are looking at their best versions. I agree on size. Louis was 6'2 207 lbs at his best fighting weight. Ali was 6'3 and 215 lbs or so. Not much of a difference. Ali is at #1 for me and Louis is at #2. I am not sure if that will ever change.
I couldn’t make either Ali or Louis a heavy favorite over the other. I think it’s a close match. I might favor Muhammad slightly. But Joe Louis was excellent at cutting off the ring. And while Ali was quicker on his feet, Joe arguably had the faster hands. His combination technique was probably the best of any fighter in any division and definitely at heavyweight. Both guys could go fifteen rounds. Ali might be a bit more durable but didn’t have the sort of power to hammer Louis into submission anyway. It’s a tough fight.
That's cause it is. Ali brought something completely new and overall boxing improved when he came on the scene. Louis era boxers were too static compared to Ali. Louis can definitely finish Ali if he connects, but he'll never be able to do that, Ali is just too fast and has too good reflexes to be caught by Louis, who lacks the footwork to do so. Ali was around 6.3, Louis was 6.1, that's 2 extra inches. Ali also had a bigger/wider frame and longer reach. That is true, Ali benefited from facing many smaller men. No it wouldn't. Ali outboxes him all night long and wins it on points, perhaps even on a late stoppage.
I think Ali peaked higher, and has a stylistic edge, but Louis has a great jab and an awesome left hook. In his prime his feet weren't slow in the way often made it, it was much more an issue as he aged, though he certainly had some trouble with movers. I'd pick Ali, but Louis is live IMO
Ali would school Louis and im sure of that, I’d actually pick all the top guys from the 70s to beat Louis
Louis' competition was n't bad at all. Lou Nova, Tommy Farr, Godoy, Conn were waaaay better than Chuvalo, bonavena, Quarry, TERRELL
