He wasnt ready for Bowe, who was a top 3 (maybe #1) heavyweight in the world at the time. It was such a jump in class. But yea as others have said he would often look tense and his chin was an issue. When he went down to cruiser in the mid 2000s i fully expected him to pick up a title with his power, but never happened
In fairness, Hide seemed to hurt Bowe each time he hit him cleanly. It's been awhile since I've seen it, but I remember Hide floundering all over the place, looking like he needed some Benzos for his anxiety, always getting dropped, and hurting Bowe on a couple of occasions. He didn't drop Bowe like Holyfield & Golota did, but he wasn't landing consistently either like they did. It was a strange fight. Bowe had so many bizarre fights and incidents.
Yow, I wouldn't put him that low. I think Hide would have done much better against 90s George, for instance.
He was far better than Pierre Coetzer, Pierre Coetzer was a journeyman/fringe contender, irrelevant, but I always wondered why Pierre Coetzee, Kallie Knoetzee and Gerrie Coetzee all had very similar surnames
He was William Randolph Hearst's favourite fighter. Little known fact. He even gave him his own secret nickname. "Love Bug." So, I think rather highly of him, I should think it fair to say.
Hide may have been better, I'm not sure. He definitely didn't do anything in his career to be labeled FAR better. They both were exciting fringe contenders with some ok wins who got beat when they stepped up in class. I'd pick Coetzer to beat him for what it's worth. Not sure about the names, I get those SA guys mixed up but I enjoy watching their fights!
Everybody is one punch away from stopping their opponent. But I seriously don’t remember any moment where it looked like Petrified HerbieHide was in any danger of winning that fight.
Watch it back, I'm not saying he was about to win, that was Bowes words, although I do remember hide stunning him.
Idk, the guys a bit of an enigma for me. Maybe he could have made it even bigger, not sure if he reached his top level? Hard to say. In another era with smaller heavy s, then possibly the lineal belt? It's maybe a stretch to say but I see him beating Jack Sharkey, Primo and Ingo.
He did, he stunned Bowe. The first few rounds he was smacking right in to Bowes mush. If that had being Lennox Lewis against Bowe then Riddick gets stopped early.
