Gomez by TKO in the middle rounds.

Great scrap, but you have to favour Gomez. 122 would have been perfect for the somewhat lazy Olivares after the Herrara bouts.

I just think Gomez was better than Olivares. On top of being bigger.

    Gomez TKO 8.

Gomez demolishes Olivares. As great as Rockabye Ruben was, Gomez, at least at 122, was better. It would have been as big a blowout as the Zarate fight for Bazooka.

Ruben Olivares is the heavier fisted in this one,but Gomez is much lighter on his feet. This fight resembles the 1978 fight with Carlos Zarate, Gomez by TKO 6.

Not so sure about Olivares being more "heavier fisted" than Gomez...

I could definitely see Olivares getting Gomez attention with some good shots, but beating him is a bridge too far. Might go longer than some think

Surprised by the overwhelming amount of picks for Gomez, as beloved as Olivares is here.

    I agree, but still surprised.

Agreed with everyone else. Like Zarate I think Olivares would be outgunned by Gomez’s combination of firepower and foot movement.

I just think Gomez had a bigger heart. It’s not even a matter of skill. I’m not sure he had the edge there, honestly.

Against Alexis Arguello Olivares was 7ish mins away from getting what a lot of viewers and press woulda called a victory. That said, whether the cards woulda given it to him or not is beyond even one with amazing powers such as my own to suss out for absolute certainty (he was up 8-3, 6-5, and tied 5-5 at stoppage time.) He managed to do that at featherweight even, where Ruben looked like a child sizewise compared to the opponents he faced at that weight. That same specific fight, fought in the 12 round era, sees Olivares get that win and managing to do so rather fuss free, at that. I know "fight math" type stuff doesn't mean too much in this sport. I am certainly not saying that I think Ruben gets the win based upon the preceding. I am saying that I think it would be kinda hasty to be saying Ruben has practically no chance to win this fight. Of course, if this fight is being held Puerto Rico, Ruben should just stay home and watch some luche libre as opposed to flying to Puerto Rico and losing in a luche libre match dressed up like a boxing match.

Can't think of too many fantasy fights I'd enjoy seeing as much as this one. It's so hard to pick against Gomez at 122. Olivares would have to be in his absolute best shape and laser-focussed to win this one. And even if he was, I'd still probably pick Gomez. Could be amazing though.

I think I can think of about 20 at just 122. There's tons of them there!
