Yeah, Montreal wasn’t that out of character for Leonard. He was versatile and could fight flat footed or also use a lot of movement on his toes. Duran 2-3 and Hagler were fights in which Leonard used a lot more movement, but it wasn’t how he usually fought. Hagler against Hearns was more out of character, he normally boxed methodically and broke guys down but turned into a bull against Hearns.
totally disagree.may would break his hands on margaritos head, cotto could be and did get hurt by floyd.manny didnt beat him fighting like floyd,he beat him by movement coupled with hard straight 6 punch combos, something floyd never ever ever did.
Arturo Gatti does NOT belong in the hall of fame, unless he’s paying admission. Duran was intimidated by Hearns. Old Foreman beats Tyson.
Not really. Dundee announced before the fight that Leonard was going to try to hang in close and beat Duran at his own fight. Pretty dumb in hindsight, and it cost them the fight.
This is really going to be controversial: You don’t have to beat someone twice for it to count as a win over them. The ‘well he didn’t give the guy a rematch’ line of reasoning to nullify a first result is garbage.
Believe me, Roberto intimidated him. Changed his whole code. I think he was a bit initmidated by Hearns, maybe, but not like Duran. He sparred with Tommy before.
I’ve always hated that utterly ludicrous and ignorant notion that Gatti’s incredible guts in the ring means he wouldn’t kill himself. It’s not only armchair psychology, but it’s also very stupid armchair psychology as well.
Interesting shout. How do you argue him ahead of Ali though? I can see Holmes > Frazier & Big George in the 70s but would be interested in how you got him above Ali
