Any time there is a fan base for one fighter they almost always have a tribal mindset. If said fighter has a rival, that fighter suffers the wrath of the casuals who mock, ridicule and marginalize that fighters career and accomplishments. I never understood that mindset. For one thing, you are trivializing your favorite fighter’s win by claiming his opponent was a hype job or overrated. I see Floyd fans do this a lot, even Floyd himself would refer to some of his opponents as C-rate fighters but at the same time expected full credit for beating them. How can it be a great or even good win if your opponent was regarded as such a hype job by your fans? We saw this with the Canelo vs GGG fights, Ward vs Kovalev, Loma vs. Teo, AJ vs Ruiz, and many others.
I don't mind being wrong, it's just a sport hahah Becoming a multiple division world champ has been watered down in significance. You say Mikey would whoop Loma AFTER the fact he lost.
good post, but don't forget the opposite is in effect with floyd too. the number of times people mention his name in a fantasy matchup and say that he would 100% get mauled or get KO'd is laughable. there is no blueprint for either in some 20 years as a pro, it's just that people love to hate floyd.
as watered down as it is, only a handful have been able to do it. no, thats where im different, i said mikey would whoop loma when loma was beating everyone in fantasy fights. when he was p4p #1. i know of what i speak.
Of course. Yes. Pro boxing industry clients mainly are casuals that had never boxed even in amateurs. If ppl wish undefeated boxer, there is matchmaker, matchmaking advisors, manager and boxer's promoter. Coach and team etc to ensure that demand is statisfied. Public see an undefeated guy with record like 15-0-0 and high KO %.
Like in boxing it is not the same. Earlier not bad guys now over the hill and out of prime. journeymans, gatekeepers etc. amazing, yeah. of course. casual rude fans. modern customer base.
Add Golovkin to the list. He wouldn't of had that long KO streak if he faced better opposition sooner. Once he stepped up, the streak was ended.
When Joshua lost to Ruiz I seen idiots say that Butterbean would have KO’d him and Ward would dance around him and school him.
i think its just a reaction to other fans hoisting a guy to a level they have not achieved or are perceived to not have achieved fans put certain fighters on this high pedestal and begin listing all time greats they could beat etc. which creates backlash from fans who did not think they reached that status yet. its only natural for the fans who were annoyed by all the trumpeting and anointing to give it back to the bandwagon when something happens.
Boxing fans are as fickle and pissy as they come, and it has only been massively exacerbated by the internet. Everyone thinks they are an expert and can run their mouth when in reality they haven't so much as sparred before. I think the hate with Loma specifically was due to his fanboys, who were out of control, picking him over prime Duran in threads etc. I will personally admit I enjoyed seeing Loma lose to completely derail the hype train. A fighter cannot be judged as an ATG etc until their career is over. That was just another example, but people never learn.
I always thought he could beat Loma, though Loma's hype and performances did put me on the fence somewhat. From what I've seen in the Lopez fight, Garcia actually had a good chance at KOing him. Garcia is 10x the range controller and shot selector Lopez is.
Mikey actually has a better resume than Loma, though, and Loma is unlikely to do much more in his career. Mikey's legacy is pretty set as a very good fighter. You can't blame Mikey for going for the money. I don't really think Mikey beats the top welterweights, but if he is losing it is due to physicality, not his skill as a fighter.
I think that is mostly true except when a guy has achieved a godly amount or is fighting way past their prime Mayweather, Pacquiao and Hopkins all had accomplishments while still active to call them all time greats However, those are rare examples
Good point. I think I said in another thread recently that when an ATG is currently active in a division(s), you KNOW about it. There is no need to debate.
