Name some dream matches that realistically could have happened, but didn't. Who was to blame for it not happening (whether it be the fighter(s), promoters...). Only dream matches that never happened count (so no May/Pac, Louis/Marciano types match-ups - which were dream matches that happened late count).

The one which always springs to mind for me is Jeff Fenech vs Antonio Esparragoza. Two guys who couldn't be in a boring fight if they tried and their styles would undoubtedly gel into a great, great fight. I always thought Fenech's pressure and head-movement is too good for Esparragoza, and he'd win an 8-4 (ish) decison. As a huge El Terriblé fan, there's three fights from his era that I wish got made: McKinney, Hamed and Marquez. They would've been great. The real reason I wish they happened (aside from getting to see Hamed smashed apart, and two great fights) is that they'd be more opportunities to out-do Barrera.

I've always thought MW Charles could have done more. Imagine Charles vs LaMotta, Lytell, Williams etc. Great wins for the Cobra.

Pops vs Scott, Qawi and Lopez could have happened. Theyd have been great fights.

Jack Dempsey vs Harry Wills, the greatest travesty that this never happened. Many factors at play here stopped this from happening. Dempsey was young naive and a cash cow for the people around him (much like Tyson 60-70 years later). He wanted to continue to fight as often as he did pre champion 15+ fights a year, but this never materialised at the request of his management. Wills was the num 1 contender throughout most of his reign and was possibly the greatest fight that never happened, many factors got in the way racism at the time nobody in power wanted it in case Wills won. There was a few attempts to make the fight happen but all fell through, Dempsey or his management drawing the colour line (the debate continues), Wills being paid off, Dempsey not getting paid, greater powers not signing it off and Wills refusing an elimination bout are a few of the complexity of this should of could of match up. To add Dempsey lost interest after his first few years as champion and had really become an inactive champion picking a few money maker fights. Apart from all the attempts to put the fight on the closest they got was an elimination for a title shot at Tunney. Wills and Dempsey both way beyond prime at this stage and it would of been a shadow fight but Harry Wills lost to Jack Sharkey. If Dempsey was a bit bolder he should of made the fight happen even if they had to travel to outer Mongolia, the public wanted it but he was easily led and apart from Brennan and Miske he went with the flow. The flavour of the month anti-Dempseyites will bark on about hearsay and fantasy but real life is a lot more complex and the history is there in front of us to read. Dempsey seems to get the biggest heat nowadays for this when other champions get away with the onslaught of the keyboard warrior in the heavies alone and a few keeping with your guidelines John L Sullivan avoiding Peter Jackson and Frank Paddy Slavin. Jim Braddock avoiding Max Schmeling. Larry Holmes avoiding Greg Page. Riddick Bowe avoiding Lennox Lewis. Lennox Lewis avoiding Chris Byrd. Wlad and Vitali avoiding each other.

Similar to another thread a lot of the middles and super middles that never happened in the early 90's.
From Roy Jones Jr vs Steve Collins. Mike McCallum vs Nigel Benn. James Toney vs Sumbu Kalambay etc. As already said on the other thread the talent was so vast at this time and boxers moving up and down weights we were never going to get all the match ups.

McCallum-Hearns is the one that immediately comes to mind. Marquez-Morales also. And RJJ-McClellan.
