After seeing this "exhibition " do you guys still think Jones beats him? I was one of those guys that thought Jones would give Tyson a boxing lesson but not now after seeing this fight.
I never thought Jones could beat him. There's a reason Jones ran away from the heavyweight division. You honestly think he decided against a bunch of potential huge money fights at heavyweight because there was unfinished business with some virtually unknown guy named Tarver at light heavy?
What I remember Jones calling out Tyson but for some reason the fight didn't happen, so he went down in weight and got handled by Tarver, probably cutting down weight did him wrong.
Depends on if Tyson can land something big in the first 2-3 rounds. After that he would have badly faded
2003 Tyson had one fight and KO'ed Etienne in 1 round and was a fit 225lbs. That Tyson KO's any version of RJJ. Stylistically Tyson is all wrong for RJJ. To beat Tyson you have to be able to tie him up because it doesn't matter how good a boxer you are he will get onto mid range at some point and you don't want him in a position to throw anything if you have a chin like Roy's and Roy for all his skills never had those skills in his arsenal or the strength to pull it off against a 225lbs Tyson.
It's close, TBH. 1980s - fight shouldn't be legal; 1990s - Tyson wins without breaking sweat; early 00s - Tyson comfortable favourite. After that [and 2003 arguably borderline qualifies as mid 00s] - it all gets a bit murky and unpleasant, and more a question of who's the less horrendously shot of the two. my instinct is probably to favour Tyson at least until his 'lost year' between the Williams and McBride fights.
Roy was in negotiations to fight Tyson & Holyfield in 2003 but they fell apart for whatever reason, so he went back down to 175. He still gutted out a win in the first fight. He got criticism because it was a close fight (and very overrated "controversy"), but in retrospect it was a solid win over a top LHW.
Exactly. Roy talked a lot about fighting at heavyweight. He talked big about fighting Tyosn, Holyfield and Lewis, even backed out on plan to fight washed up Buster Dougas. Instead of staying in the big money division, he ran back down to light heavy and took on a fight no one cared about. Jones did poorly that fight and blamed losing the weight as an excuse for him not doing as well as usual. He weighed-in for Ruiz at 193 and that was with boots and all his clothes on. He barely had to cut weight to get back down to light heavy. It was an excuse for his poor performance (which he won btw). Then, in the rematch he had no excuses. He got KTFO...and that's all the proof we need to know why Roy ran away from heavyweight. Stupid move on his part. He could have gotten KTFO by Lennox Lewis and it would have done no damage to his his legacy and been much better for his bank account. Lewis was willing at the time because he saw the dollar signs and an easy win.
If anything the fight shows is that maybe Tyson's body attack would be what hurts Roy. That is what hurt Spinks and opened him up for the knockout in the previous knockdown. Mike always did well against the smaller guys where his power got to them. The guys which it didn't work with were the bigger guys like Buster and Lennox.. Although Evander was smaller. I think the Evander vs Mike fight in 1990 would have been interesting since Evander was not yet the size he was later.
Why is this even being discussed, any version of Mike would ko any version of Roy.. Funny isn't it, other guys move up in weignt and everyone's like there's weight limits for a reason.. No different here, Roy has no business being In there with Mike. Get a grip people
The version of Jones that beat Ruiz has a good chance. That Jones was phenomenal. He gets a lot of hate for whatever reason but that night, he was special. 2003 Tyson wasnt what he was, and it would depend on how motivated he was for teh fight. The fight that happened on Saturday proves nothing either way. Jones still has fast hands and some nice movement, but you can see even from the way he WALKS that his legs are gone. His knees must be decrepid.
Even if what you say is true, you think Tyson was 5'10 and absolutely shredded at 225 just by eating his wheaties?
