He actually looked better in this exhibition than he did in his last few fights. That is pretty impressive considering those fights were 15+ years ago. I think the main difference was he started using more head movement (slipping and bobbing / weaving) again, which he had gotten away from later in his career. He just needs to give Kevin Rooney a call to do some fine tuning.
I actually didn't think Tyson was capable of that kind of movement at his age. It puts a lot of pressure on the knees and back, both of which he's had problems with in the past. It just shows you the true talent that he is. A far cry from the heavyweights of today who's lateral movements mostly suck. No heavyweight of today moves like that, and that's a bloody 54 year old.
Being knocked out so many times (Jones) is going to **** you up, Tyson was fresher. Tyson was always far better technically than Jones. Yes Jones was a freak athletically in the 80s/90s, but this is the 20s in another century.
His conditioning was a lot better than I expected. He was still moving his head and looking for openings in the last round. If he didn’t have the rule handcuffs on I have no doubt he would’ve KO’d Jones.
Im just glad tyson had the pride and integrity to actually try to get in boxing shape and not demean himself like so many so called professional who barely try nowadays to get in any decent boxing shape
Its just a testament to how out of sorts he was in the early 2000s with drug use, partying, not training, and being in a bad spot mentally. At least to me, anyways.
Yes. He looked pretty great for a man of his age. He was moving the head, using a jab. It was a good show. Let's not mistake this for a real boxing match though. This was a fun sparring match, There no nerves, no pressure and he's not throwing with murderous intentions. The clinches were kind of fake and playful. No energy draining leaning and wrangling was going on. Those are the things that drain stamina in a real fight.
Did you see when he dropped real low before comin up and throwin the right hand....I don't think I've seen a fighter do that since that last time Tyson did it lol...he definitely was impressive with his movement. It's also obvious that he was holding back the KO.
I'm glad that there are some in this thread realize that Tyson has better boxing skills than Jones does. So many people equate speed both of hand and feet as being a boxing skill, but to me its really a physical attribute. Skill is putting yourself in position to hit and not be hit when all other physical attirbutes are equal.
Kevin Rooney has Dementia and is no longer capable of training fighters apparently. That ship has sadly sailed.
Let's not kid ourselves, Jones didn't have the power to trouble Tyson. Get a real power puncher i.e. Lewis or an accumulation non stop puncher i.e Holyfield and some real questions will be asked.
He did not surprise me at all. He actually admitted that he was high during the fight. My guess was right.
