    Tim Witherspoon vs Greg Page.
    9 March 1984
    Convention Centre, Las Vegas, Nevada
    Vacant WBC heavyweight title.

    @William Walker
Because of your thread, I hadn't watched much Page in a while.

R1 9-10 (close) Page. Tim got off some good shots but Page plugged away with the jab.
R2 10-9 Tim. Page was missing a lot in this round and Tim hurt him.
R3 9-10 (close) Page. Page busier and good finish.
R4 10-9 (close) Tim. Tim connecting with more.
R5 9-10 (close) Page. Page connecting more.
R6 9-10 (close) Page. Tim getting of power shots but Page landing often.
R7 10-9 Tim. Tim caused Page trouble with some shots.
R8 9-10 Page. Tim not doing much.
R9 9-10 Page. Much the same as R8.
R10 9-10 (close) Page. Tim's best round in a while but Page just shades it.
R11 10-9 Tim. Page hurt, Tim's best round.
R12 10-9 Tim. Tim the better in the last 2 rounds.
    I scored it 113-115 Page.
    Judges 114-114, 117-111, 117-111.
Witherspoon was the aggressor and connected with more power shots but he didn't throw enough punches for me, I thought Page fought a smart game and just pampered Tim with shots. If Tim pressed a bit more I think he would of gotten the KO as he troubled our of shape Page a few times. What a waste of talent really. I wouldn't begrudge anyone giving it to Witherspoon, a tough one to judge and I have enough close rounds (6) to reverse it either way.

    Jose Stable vs. Vince Shomo

    Round 1-Stable
    Round 2-Shomo
    Round 3-Shomo
    Round 4-Stable
    Round 5-Stable
Round 6-Stable up until the stoppage

This was one helluva fight. I had been wanting 2 see it a while, but never could find it anywhere until recently. The two fought at a great pace for the first 3 rounds, and then it got a little tame after that. Spectacular fight, but disappointing ending in the 6th.

Will, you should watch Stable versus Curtis Cokes. Interesting fight, I'd be curious to see your score.

I have seen it a long time ago. Great fight. Stable was always in great fights. Love his fight w/ Scott 2, and the Griffith fight wasn't bad either. I would be glade 2 score the Stable-Cokes fight tho.

You should read about his life on Wikipedia. What a complete loon.

Just checked boxrec. He shot a cop in the early 80s. I wonder what he was initially in trouble for before he did that.

I like the part about him spinning a live chicken around his head in the courtroom later. You can't make up stuff that good.

Looking back now after reading that, my first question should have been how he got it into the courtroom in the first place.

Wow. Never heard that before. I always wonder what happened to his career. He didn't fight very long, but was a real promising talent around the time he beat guys like Cokes, Scott, Hayward, and Shomo, but then up and retired just a few yrs. later.

Riddick Bowe v Andrew Golota 1 and 2

Memorable pair of fights with controversy all the way through. I watched these alongside the HBO Legendary Nights episode of these fights, which helped bring the whole thing to life and took me back to the time (although I don't think I watched these fights back then).

Golota bottled both of these fights - he was leading comfortably but there is no doubt his temperament was his achilles heel as a fighter and when the going got even slightly tough, he bailed out. Which is a real shame because he had all the tools apart from that glaring one. By contrast, Bowe used to have the skills but was forced to rely on heart, particularly in the second fight. He just didn't have anything left. It was pretty much the end for both of them after these wars.

Riddick Bowe v Andrew Golota 1

1 9-10 (good opening round - both fighters starting well)
    2 9-10
    3 9-10
4 9-9 (Golota with horrible low blow)
    5 9-10
    6 9-9 (another low blow)
    (54-59)
    7 Bowe wins by DQ

Riddick Bowe v Andrew Golota 2

    1 9-10
2 7-9 (Bowe down; Golota point deduction for intentional headbutt)
3 10-9 (great recovery from Bowe)
4 10-7 (Bowe puts Golota down; psycho Golota hits him with blatant low blows for another point deduction)
    5 7-10
    6 9-10 (close)
7 9-10 (close to a two point round)
    8 9-10
    (70-75)
9 Bowe wins by DQ again as Golota hits him with more blatant low blows

Great fights, these two and Byrd are probably Golota's finest. Yeah Golota was self implosion at its best. The 2nd fight was a shock when he started low blowing again, I remember a crowd of us watching it in the club and nobody could believe he started again, Bowe looked like he was in disbelief as well. Do you know if Golota ever gave a reason why?
He was some talent when he was on game, seemed to lack a bit of big punch power for a big man though as well as his obvious flaw as you stated.
With the Larry, Curly, Moe belts flying around in the 90's, it's a shame he didn't get his hands on one for a while.

I'm mot sure but his comment after the Lewis fight was instructive: "There was too much pressure." I think that applies to the Bowe fights as well. In the second fight he started throwing low in the 9th when he just couldn't get rid of Bowe - Bowe kept hanging in there, mounting the odd mini rally and hustling his way through the round, just managing to keep going and I think Golota got frustrated and had another meltdown.

Myung-Woo Yuh vs Mario Alberto DeMarco I

This one has been on my watchlist for months since @George Crowcroft recommended it to me.

Did they have Compubox back in the mid-80s in South Korea? If so, this fight might have broken some punch stats records. Ridiculous level of unbroken action.

DeMarco was the aggressor throughout. He started very well and had a clear lead on my card over the first third but gradually Yuh wore him down and evened things up on my card and definitely finished the stronger.

    1 9-10
    2 10-9
    3 9-10
    4 9-10 (close)
    5 9-10
    6 10-9
    7 9-10
    8 10-9
    9 10-9
    10 10-9 (close)
    11 10-10
12 10-9 (crazy round. Yuh battled back hard to take it)
    13 10-9
    14 10-9 (close)
    15 10-9 (close again)

    Yuh 145-141 DeMarco

Mosley vs De La Hoya 2

Had this on DAZN was going to watch Hopkins vs Taylor 2 but it was ****ing up as an app and kept rewinding all videos back the beginning

This fight was very controversial at the time it happened and watching it again it was a very close fight. Nowhere near as good as the first fight and I know it was also tainted by the Balco scandal. I wound up scoring this fight 114-114 but it was close.

Had Oscar win: 1,4,5,6,8 and 10
    With Mosley winning: 2,3,7,9,11,and 12

I really feel the first 4 rounds are a pretty big toss up. Oscar had a persistent jab and his right hand was awesome in this fight. He landed quite a few flush right hand leads. Mosely landed some real bombs in this fight and displayed some great head movement.

Side note: I thought Jack Mosely did a great job in the corner this fight. I know he was criticized a lot back then but I feel he said the right things at the right times to get Shane to get over the hump. After a close 5th round he told Shane he was not throwing enough and had to put more punches together. After another round the 6th where Oscar seemed to gain control he told Shane he was not landing enough punches and had to be busier. He told him the shots dont have to be as hard he has to put them together. Shane was loading up and waiting too much at that point. After 7 he tells Shane he thought Oscar was hurt to the body and Shane went to the body in the 8th and by round 9 he was landing body blows that effected De La Hoya.

I found round 9 maybe to be the clearest round of the fight and I scored that for Mosely. I think Round 5,6,10 are very hard to argue for Mosley. Both men were so good at responding to big punches. It was rare that one guy took over or had a solid minute or two of control. Most of the time it was one landed a shot the other came back and then they moved and positioned for the next exchange. I think that is what made scoring this fight pretty difficult.

I had this one 117-114 for DeLaHoya. But excellent breakdown on the fight, Kidd.
