Does this mean that Michael Spinks would have left Dempsey unconscious once he landed the Jinx??

He couldn`t punch like a powerful modern heavy.

He might have knocked him out with the shots that stopped Cooney.

This. When will people understand that weight isn’t the only factor that determines punching power and the idea that Carpentier couldn’t punch is crazy. Even a tiny fighter can knock a big fighter senseless if they connect clean. Mickey Walker was a middleweight and dropped plenty of large heavyweights and even knocked some of them out.

As was Firpo's which he also absorbed , survived and went on to KO his opponent .. is your point Dempsey had a weak chin or just keeping up your career in comedy ?

I agree with you .. some real lightweights here .. Henry Cooper weighed 185 pounds and almost KO'ed Ali. Doug Ones was a blown up light heavyweight and almost flattened Ali in round 1 of their bout .. guess Ali had no chin either.

If you think Carpentier hit with the force of a modern elite heavy you are simply viewing the sport and its past as some sort of costume drama and are completely divorced from the realities of it as a physical competition.

Deeply flawed logic I would say.

So Nikolai Valuev is the hardest hitter in boxing history? There is no doubt that heavyweights are bigger and stronger and their average punch is heavier (not all, some have the softest hands). But without a shadow of a doubt a lighter boxer can hit hard enough to hurt a heavyweight, because so many factors come into play apart from size and power, speed, accuracy, timing, balance, whether your opponent is moving in, out, left or right, flexibility etc and add in from Carpentiers era less padding on the gloves. I don't know why people can't grasp this, maybe armchair boxing fans (not bemoaning non boxers, just trying to figure out this lack of understanding, maybe the Dempsey hatred has blinded them from rational thinking), I hope so cause anyone who has worn a pair of gloves will not under-estimate any opponent no matter how small they are cause that will be your first lesson learned in the gym.
Just to add, Sam Langford often knocked out boxers 40 pounds heavier, Dempsey himself knocked down Willard who was 60 pounds heavier. Carpentier himself knocked out a few heavyweights, maybe not the size of now, but as far as I know he didn't fight any that big, maybe Bombardier Billy Wells who was apparently only around 190, if that is to be believed. Boxers then trimmed down for more speed as oppose to now, you bulk up so you won't get bullied around the ring (heavier classes), not necessarily for punch power (more the lighter classes).

Carpentier wouldn't be a blip on the heavyweight radar in modern times. He really didn't deserve to be a blip in his own time. He made for a nice storyline when paired with Dempsey, a narrative the WWE would be proud of, and is somehow remembered as legit opponent, and more, is promoted by some as being a talent that would translate into any other era. The fight was a crock... even for its era.

I wish there was a time machine so we could bring Carpetier to the present day to test this statement on you.
