    Duke McKenzie v Dave McAuley

Continuing my interest in Dave McAuley fights, I checked out his title-winning bout from Duke McKenzie

    Round 1: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 2: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 3: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 4: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 5: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 6: 10-9 McAuley
Round 7: 10-8 McAuley (extra point for hurting and battering McKenzie this round)
    Round 8: 10-10 Even
    Round 9: 10-9 McKenzie
    Round 10: 10-9 McKenzie
    Round 11: 10-9 McAuley
    Round 12: 10-9 McAuley

Total: 118-110 McAuley (actual scores: 115-113, 115-113 and 117-110* all for McAuley)

*I wrote the audible score. Very clearly the announcer is heard to state judge Bernie Friedkin's score as 117-110, but somehow boxrec as this as 117-113.

Regarding the fight, I expected more from McKenzie. However, he may well have been weight-drained. He immediately went up to bantamweight after this, very successfully I might add. But he could do nothing with McAuley this night. And I feel the score of two of the judges were ridiculously close, which did not reflect what was going on in the ring. Like I said, McKenzie was a bit of a disappointment and it takes two to make a fight.

Archie Moore vs Nino Valdes 1

    [CLIP]

Excellent jab set up from Moore, alongside his awesome right hands. Moore also showed some awesome inside defense in this clip. To be honest, from what I've seen here of the right hand landing repeatedly, Marciano would definitely KO Valdes, and I don't think it is that debatable. Further in the clip there is some great inside scrapping, from the later rounds. Tremendous pace from both men, though with Moore clearly looking the smaller man.

I agree. Marciano would have beaten Valdez and Bob Baker too. I wished he would have and erased any doubts of him against a big man. But I have no doubts. I just wish the managerial machine would have taken those extra chances.

Muangchai Kittikasem v Jung Koo Chang

Very good fight in which I felt Kittikasem was doing better than Chang (I had him up 7 rounds to 4 before the final round) but those knockdowns pulled things back in points and kept things on a knife edge going into the final round.

Chang looked ragged for much of the fight but they say the last thing a great fighter loses is his punch and that was certainly the case here. Still, Kittikasem deserved to win and Chang was done after the first KD, but the second one was completely conclusive and the ref had no choice but to stop it.

    1 10-9
    2 10-9
    3 10-9
    4 10-9
5 7-10 (Kittikasem is downed twice)
    6 9-10
    7 9-10
    8 10-9
    9 10-9
    10 10-9
    11 8-10 (Kittiskasem down again)
    (103-103)
    12 Kittikasem TKO Chang
(Chang down twice and ref stops it)

    Thanks George!

Gerry was a phenomenal talent, wasn't he? I would wax lyrical about him on almost a weekly basis back in the day. :clapclap:

    Hello buddy!

Apologies, I moved over to the other forum when the split occurred. I think my main issue was that this place no longer entertained avatars, and for me that was a fairly integral part of the experience.

In any event, I thought I would return and see how things are these days.

    How have you been keeping?

Yeah, man. Been back a few months now. Got back into boxing during the shutdown. Still the best boxing discussion on the net. Lot of kids, though.

I thought I would watch another Duke McKenzie fight after the McAuley fight didn't seem to bee him at his best. So I saw his title-winning bout with Jesse Benavides was out there in its entirety and thought I would check it out. But beware! All is not what it seems.

    Jesse Benavides v Duke McKenzie

    Round 1: 10-10 Even
    Round 2: 10-9 Benavides
    Round 3: 10-9 Benavides
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-9 McKenzie
    Round 6: 10-9 Benavides
    Round 7: 10-9 Benavides
    Round 8: 10-9 Benavides
    Round 9: 10-9 McKenzie
Round 10: 10-8 McKenzie (called a knockdown but a clear trip)
    Round 11: 10-9 Benavides
    Round 12: 10-9 Benavides

Total: 116-113 Benavides (actual scores: 115-113, 115-112 and an amazing 118-110 all for McKenzie)

Couldn't believe this. Even the very biased announcing team of Ian Darke, Glenn McCrory and Gary Mason (in the studio) all had Benavides a winner by at least 2 points. The knockdown was BS. I was surprised that the announcing team wouldn't call it as such even when they reviewed it twice. Both times you can clearly see McKenzie's foot hook around Benavides' and Jesse had no place to go but down. And let's talk about the Canadian judge Harry Mason for a second. 118-110???? What the hell! And of course he was penalized by the world powers for his ineptness by giving him a steady stream of plum assignments instead of pulling his license. Anyways, this is just me being annoyed when I see something like this. It was not a fantastic fight but it was a tough fight. A bit too much clinching, but not horrible to watch. And I would still like to hear others opinion on this decision.
