he has more power then wright but his jab was nowhere near wrights level. He isnt faster then wright either.
For-me it’s a combination of the mindset mentality and relentlessnessof the south paw Hagler, the body punching ability and craftiness of Mike McCallum and the excellent fundamental skills set of fellow Texan Donald Curry.
Go back and read. I clearly stated that Spence was blocking alot of Garcia's punches with his gloves. Your response makes no sense.
A lot of guys aren’t impressed with Spence and I honestly don’t see what they’re seeing, I think he’s a really good fighter. If he works on his defense he’s beating Crawford and taking over the division
The only similarity with McCallum I see is the jab, especially the way he switches from head to body, that's one of Spence's strength's a well disguised jab that he switches levels with constantly. Much like how Usyk hypnotizes opponents with his lead hand, Spence does the same a few rounds of eating jabs to the head and body and they end up focusing on the jab and then eat a cross or hook. Other than that I don't see it. McCallum moved his head more, had a different guard, used lateral movement while Spence while having quick feet is very much moving in straight lines due to his wide stance. McCallum had the check hook off the jab while Spence really doesn't throw a hook with his lead hand much at all, it's one area where I think he could really improve and where opponents could exploit, if they slip to their left instead of right like most orthodox fighters tend to do, it will expose Spence to the left hook while taking away any avenue to attack as they our on his outside.
I see a very good fighter who's mastered the fundamentals but when we're talking about the more subtle skills I think he's lacking and will get exposed to some degree when he steps up and faces something truly elite. He adopts the high guard, this is the most basic of guards and is utilised by fighters who have no head movement. Spence's defence is all high guard plus his quick movement and his quick movement is in straight lines. That's great at all until you face a fighter you can't control range on which is why Spence is at his most vulnerable when pushed back as the Porter and Brook fights showed. He doesn't have the more nuanced lateral movement that would side step guys coming right at him and he won't ever have it because he adopts such a wide foot stance to generate leverage on his punches, it's quite reminiscent of Wilder. He's a fighter basically relying very much on his physical gifts, such as size, speed, strength, physical conditioning to grind fighters down, but in terms of skills I'm not that impressed, he has weaknesses that can be exploited he just hasn't fought anyone good enough yet to exploit them at least not for 12 rounds. Brook showed he could be made to look beatable but couldn't maintain it after the injury. Once Spence fights someone like Crawford I think even if he some how wins he'll have a lot of his deficiencies exposed and he doesn't have a style where I think he'll age well or can move up much in weight because he's so reliant on his physical attributes. Once he slows a little and he can't control distance anymore or if he's in against bigger stronger men he can't physically dominate, he'll look far from elite.
Agree he has more Power, Wright was never a big puncher and yes Wrights jab was better it seemed much heavier than Spence's. Wright jab when landing sometimes looked more like a straight it was so heavy. Wright also hooked off the jab with the hand something Spence doesn't do. Wright's defence with is high guard was better too, he utilised more head movement sometimes switching to an almost peekaboo guard. As for speed, not much in it, I think Spence is a little quicker being a welter.
Workman like version of Hagler minus the fancy jerky movement. He is basic but better than you see if you know what i mean. He doesn't look impressive or flashy but it's better than it looks on camera. Good jab. Whilst basic he has good defense and foot work is good as well. I dunno. He is a jab bot too. So he starts with that jab most of the time. Boring? nah.. not really because he is there throwing not running. DO I see weakness? Of course. I believe he hasn't fought a speedy fighter that can go at thim and make him uncomfortable. He iz UNIQUE!
I kind of disagree about his foot work. He has good balance and quick feet which allows him to move in and out of range very well, but if we're talking about lateral movement and ability to really move and create or cut off distance I don't think he's that good. We saw vs Brook how Brook pushing him back made him struggle because he didn't have the foot work to get out of the way as he backs up in straight lines. Also in the Porter fight he really struggled with Porters movement, pushing him back like Brook but also using lateral movement to confuse him and create angles to land shots. If you watch Spence's feet during the Porter fight he looks like a plodder in there slowly plodding forward because he has to have his feet set to punch unlike Porter who could suddenly shift and launch an attack while on the move. Spence is great if you stand right in front of him like Garcia and many others do but show him angles and he looks beatable, he's very much like Tito in that regard.
