Why didn't Floyd unify at 130, 135, or 140? It would have done more for his legacy if he had won a 2nd belt at those weights.
Good questions. A lot of the joyboys always said Floyd cared about his legacy, which was untrue. But according to one joyboy in particular, once Floyd beat the top guy, he didn't feel the need to beat anyone else there. Stupid logic. but that's what it was....
Let me start by saying I think Mayweather is a superb boxer. He could teach a trigonometry class a thing or two about angles. He is so good defensively he can leave opponents dazed without even throwing a punch. That being said Floyd never cared about his legacy more than he cared about Floyd. Floyd wasn’t a fighter, he was a businessman. Mayweather played a game of chess when it came to matchmaking and chose the path of least resistance. He waited six years so that he could face a much less supersonic version of the Pacquiao who tore through Ricky Hatton, Miguel Cotto and Antonio Margarito. The Oscar De La Hoya Mayweather jr faced had lost two of his previous four contests (and one of the wins, against Felix Sturm, was widely disputed). Cotto and Shane Mosley were also past their peaks when after years of trying they finally stepped into the ring with Mayweather. To answer the question at hand, Floyd didn’t unify more because he chose the path of least resistance towards his goals which were to make a ton of money and retire undefeated.
Did you just made this on nsb lol? Well really if you look at it now body cares about WBO til Hopkins in 04 At 130 he beat Hernandez who was WBC and should have been a unification vs Corales who was stripped shortly before fight for outside of boxing reasons, 135 Castillo was Lineal 140 Gatti was WBC couldn’t fight Tyzu and Hatron nor Cotto wanted to fight and refused at the time. 147 his first stint he beat the last 2 true undisputed champs Baldomir not being able to pay fees is only reason he wasn’t undisputed within 3 WW fights. Dude retired as Unified WBC/WBA/WBO WW champ pretty much undisputed and WBC/WBA JMW champ so that’s pretty damn unified I’d say
I felt this at the time due to spending years wanting the next fight to be Pacquiao so all these others were disappointments. When they did fight, I thought it was the last of Manny, but here he is at a high level 5 years later. Oscar was too old, Canelo was too young, but Floyd is always prime. In retrospect, there aren't many scrubs in his record after he became a contender, even if they aren't exactly the opponents we wanted.
Floyd was an ATG ducker, whose ducking was enabled further by him being the massive A-side on any fight. Why fight Paul Williams when you can fight Ricky Hatton up from 140.
Do at least some research beforehand. Not to be that guy, but: Pacquiao never even won an actual belt at 126 or 140lbs. He did not unify at 130, 135 or 154. The only unification bout he had at 147 was against Floyd. Now sit down and do some thinking.
Cause he’s a coward ***** and unifying would have required to face legit challenges instead of cherry picking “champs” like Carlos Bumdomir
