Of course it would. Unifying all 4 belts, beating 3 top ten P4P fighters whilst they are active title holders in the division. Also when you look at Hoyas resume, who did he actually beat who had a really good WW resume? Or atleast a resume at 147 that's clearly better than Crawford's? If you use that as a cut off, his WW resume is suddenly very thin itself.
Not a great comparison really. Part of the problem for Oscar in surpassing SRL was not only the talent of Leonard's era, but that he beat all of them. It's hard to do better than beating everyone. But Oscar arguably lost to three of the four best he fought at the weight, very arguably to two, without avenging it in a rematch (the Mosley rematch was at 154). There's very clear room for improvement there in terms of dominating your era. That room just didn't exist when trying to improve on SRL:s time at WW.
Well DLH was robbed against Triandad and Mosley rematch just to be fair , He sure beat Ruelas, Chavez, Gonzalez, Gatti, Carr , Camacho, Quartey, Whitaker (close) Mayorga and Vargas, Add up the two robberies Mosley 2 and Trinidad and it's a great record.
Define greatness. If you talk about popularity and recognition. No way. As much as I dislike de la hoya he had something special, and the general public L-O-V-E-D (and love) him. Spence will never achieve that. In terms of boxing? oposition is not good enough right now, so I think that he will not either..
De la hoya was willing to face everybody. Spence is hesitant to fight crawford. That should tell you right there.
Most had him losing to Quartey I think and many had him losing to Whitaker as well and the Mosley rematch was at 154, the same with the Mayorga and Vargas fights. Camacho and Chavez were nothings at WW at that point. Both shot and above their best weight. All in all I agree it's a great record, but his record specifically at WW gets a bit overblown I think.
De La Hoya was not robbed vs Tito. It was very close; I had it a draw. The Ike fight was close, but I thought Ike nicked it. The Sweet Pea fight wasn't particularly close IMO. I had that 115-111 for Pete. So that leaves you with a loss to Mosley, and his best wins being Rivera, Carr, and a shot Chavez. I don't see why Spence can't top that.
Oscar was a true warrior, just like Manny. He competed at world class level at five weight classes and faced the best. But he didn't always beat the best and that's why I see a chance for Spence to surpass him at WW.
