I was a teenager when Forrest Mosley 1 happened. I was so invested in Mosley and had no knowledge of boxers outside of the big stars, so I was completely shocked when Mosley was thoroughly beaten up by what I had considered and "uknown". Looking back now it makes me chuckle

dont know if they were both undefeated or not but Jerry Quarry KO 1 Ernie Shavers is one of those wipeout fights between two up and comers that seems to have been forgotten by time got some reason

Most people were shocked. Forrest was a 7 to 1 underdog. Even though Forrest was respected as a fighter and known to be a high-risk/low-reward, people figured Mosley was just too fast and too good.

One of the few good things about multiple titles is it can be a marketing tool for high-risk/low-reward guys. Now most big names wouldn’t fight guys like Forrest and Winky anyway, so Shane gets lots of credit for it, but I doubt HBO puts up the money for those fights if Winky and Forrest didn’t have belts. They could sell it as unification fights.

It’s interesting, after Forrest beat Mosley, one of the magazines, I think World Boxing or KO or The Ring, showed some prior predictions from 99’ or so in regards to a potential matchup. All of the people said Forrest was too big and skilled for Mosley, that it was a terrible matchup for Shane. But Shane beat Oscar at 147 and looked so good in his follow up fights that I’m pretty sure it a relatively small minority than still felt the same way about Forrest beating Shane.

Alan Green's brutal first round KO against Jadon Codignton. One of the most vicious KO's I have ever seen.

Michael Nunn vs Frank Tate deserves a mention. That was a masterclass performance from Nunn.

Billy Collins Jr against "Snakebite" Johnson in 1983. ESPN fight featuring two unbeatens a few fights before the tragic Resto fight. I was watching with someone not familiar enough with then current boxing to know the difference between a "pushed fighter" and a pumped up sacrificial lamb. "Snakebite" was a tanned, tatted up guy with washboard abs and Billy Collins looked like, well, a pudgy Irish kid who should be working at McDonald's. Guess what happened? Buddy insisted Collins would get his head handed to him and instead Snakebite got viciously pounded and quick and they stopped it before Round One was finished. Snakebite's last fight. Retired afterwards.

I really appreciate you taking the time to write that out. I wasn't privy to the boxing scene at that point so it's really interesting to hear. In 2003 I started following every fight I could, and for a moment, thought Forrest was just a flash in the pan after losing twice to mayorga- this is before I realized styles make fights. It didn't help that he was off with injuries for a while afterward. When he came back I recognized the talent he was though. I miss the early millennium quite a bit. I think that's my golden era of boxing and I'm going to grow to be one of those narrow minded, old heads that think fighters from that era could beat every new crop of fighters. We'll see though.

Dana Rosenblatt vs Chad Parker. So quick and decisive that Parker never fought again.

Yeah that second fight is a great example of a more recent one. Absolute beatdown that.
