So AJ meeting Fury would be the biggest, most important fight since a certain Mr Ali and Mr Frazier locked horns.. Mmmm.
    Anyone agree with Bob?

It's his job as a promoter to sell the fight so I'm not going to criticize the comment.

It's the first time in a long long time that two young prime heavyweights that have both proven themselves as the dominant men of the current era fight for all the belts, this holds significant historical value that most will not appreciate today but more so as time goes on.

Of course some people will be mad that people dare mention these two in the same sentence as Ali and Frazier but time will tell if they are worthy or not, I certainly think who ever wins will be held in the same regard and deservingly so.

I think the last time we was in this situation was probably Lewis v Holyfield, that is two big names unifying the belts. Obviously this one's got a big more bite to it imo, as Holyfield was seen by then I think on the slope down?
Back before then, we have Lewis and Bowe, never happened.
And then previous, and pretty big for its time, Tyson v Spinks.
Which of course was a total blowout.
On a lot smaller scale, Tyson v Tucker, a unification with two unbeaten guys. Tucker did ok but it was never seen as a competitive fight going in.

He’s got skin in the game, like most other guys that overhype every fight nowadays. So tired of guys being compared to GOATs by commentators trying to hype up fights.
Ali Foreman, Tyson Holyfield, Holmes Cooney, Ali Frazier III, Floyd Manny, Tyson Spinks, Ward Gatti fights, to name a few. No money to be made on those anymore so we have to compare the current weak HW division to the 70’s.

It's not as crazy as it first might sound.

    Let's look at the contenders:

Ali-Foreman. A huge event to be sure, but Ali was past his prime, had gone life and death to fighters Foreman had destroyed and was a 3-1 underdog. Going into the actual fight I can't see really how it was better than AJ-Fury.

Ali-Frazier 3: Also a fight that stepped into legend after it was done, but going in to it you had two greats that were both some way past their best.

Tyson-Spinks: This turned out to be a bit of a non-event, but you had two undefeated champions duking it out, and while Spinks definitely was the underdog some were picking him to win.

Holy-Tyson 2: The first one was actually seen as just a payday for Tyson going in, and only became a classic after the fact, but the rematch was more highly anticipated as a competitive match-up. Again, it was two guys past their best and not for the undisputed championship either.

Lewis-Holy: For the undisputed championship more or less (can't remember if all the major belts were involved), but Lewis wasn't that highly regarded at the time and Holy was of course half a decade at least past his best.

So going in to it, I definitely feel this belongs there. It will be a fight for being the first truly undisputed champ since Lewis and you have two guys in their primes who have beaten everyone they've faced. I actually don't know the last time something like that happened.

    Won't live up to it

Frazier Ali was a great fight worthy of 2 rematches.

AJ will swallow and Fury will destroy him. Won't even be worthy of a rematch.

Maybe it's because I'm biased toward loving the older guys and the classic era. I actually hope it does turn out to be an absolute, unforgettable fight and even better one of a series!

The things is that one forgets how it looked at the time. Holy-Tyson 1 was seen as boxing at its worst at the time. Tyson-Bowe was the fight fans really wanted (before the Golota shambles) and after that Tyson-Lewis. Holy was seen as a shamefully easy way to make big money on a washed up fighter.

Tyson-Spinks on the other hand was eagerly anticipated. That was the fight to make at the time. After the fact that seemed like where Tyson collected a huge payday for crushing a washed up fighter just looking for the paycheck, so it's a bit a reverse from Holy-Tyson.
