This is pure nonsense. Calzaghe was younger. Age 36 Hopkins was older. Age 43 Calzaghe fought Hopkins in his 45th professional fight. Hopkins fought Calzaghe in his 55th professional fight. Hopkins had already boxed more rounds total than Calzaghe had when they fought. Aside from age, rounds boxed and amount of fights... you also need to look at the quality of opponent. Elite high level competition adds more miles onto a boxer as they simply take more damage and leave more of themselves in the ring win or lose. Hopkins fought better competition than Calzaghe as there is no one on Calzaghes record that compares to Hopkins. Hopkins fought an undefeated Roy Jones Jr who was coming into his prime. Hopkins took fights and pushed himself to be great against legends like an Undefeated Trinidad, an Undefeated Jermaine Taylor, Oscar De La Hoya, Winky Wright etc. To say Calzaghe, who didn’t leave the UK, had more miles on him than Hopkins is objectively, simply, wrong in every measurable metric.
who they fought and when is the only fool proof way to assess the relevance of a fighter's career. the best fighter in his prime that joe ever fought was mikkel kessler. after 46 fights. now if what i've said isn't true, as an australian, should i be running around saying danny green is the GOAT because he KO'd roy jones in round 1? that would be ridiculous, wouldn't it? the reason why it's ridiculous is because in the CONTEXT of when the fight happened, it meant exactly nothing. just like when joe fought roy. now go and have a look at floyd's resume, and count all the mikkel kessler + opponents that are on it, and you'll see the difference between a great undefeated fighter who fought on the biggest stage of all, and a very good fighter with a padded record who did not for 95% of his career.
don't get me wrong, calzaghe was an excellent fighter. better than ottke. but he also pissed away any chance of finding out how good he was by playing the frank warren game (which the germans loved to do too) of making $$$ by getting 'a belt' and milking it as far away from the US as possible.
Robin Reid, ( Very close call ), Richie Woodall, Charles Brewer all excellent Fighters. As for Mayweather, he bores me to tears I'm afraid.
It's an argument that holds water Aussie. I was sometimes frustrated by Joe. I was at the Woodhall fight, supporting Richie, and that's when I realised how good Calzaghe really was.
i don't think anyone polarizes fans like calzaghe tbh. except maybe floyd, but for completely different reasons.
Is this the one where his sons cry at the end and Joe has to walk over & comfort them? That's the only bit I remember.
He doesn't have the best record, wouldn't say he only beat bums. He manufactured an undefeated record, like Mayweather, who made a few $ too. Calzaghe beat several more than decent contenders, Eubank and Jones were shot but still dangerous, embarrassed an undefeated Kessler, embarrassed the so called US monster Lacy who was supposed to kill him, and old Hopkins who I don't rate as a supreme middle, but who had beaten Winky Wright less than a year earlier, and would beat Pavlik less than a year later.
do you honestly believe calzaghe "manufactured an undefeated record" like mayweather? be very careful if you think calzaghe ranks alongside mayweather in that respect, because i'm going to break you down if you try to sell that garbage.
stop making excuses when you know people who don't tolerate bull**** can break you down when you try to make excuses
Shut up you clown. Most of his opponents mentioned he’s far stronger than he looked, who gives a **** if you don’t believe it
you're getting defensive because you can't back up the claims you've been making. if you want to lock horns with me and try to defend calzaghe you can't win, but you're welcome to try.
