I watched this fight last night as well. A lot of clinching throughout. My first Langford fight, and I admit, not much of a fight either, but it was a joy just to watch Langford regardless. I thought this fight alone testified to Langford's greatness. Flynn was two inches taller than Langford, but Langford was controlling the fight at the outside, with the jab primarily. Flynn would get inside sometimes where he could have greater control, but even at that, Langford was still the better man inside as well. I thought it was simply amazing. The knockout came in the 9th: Flynn was just unleashing an explosive barrage of haymakers, he was swinging w/ a wild left, but Langford landed w/ a huge right haymaker 1st, and Flynn was finished. Verdict: Decent fight, more of a masterful performance of control ending in an explosive knockout by Mr. Sam Langford, though I'm sure it's not one of his best performances. What do you guys think about this one?
probably the only available Langford fight i haven't seen. Is it on youtube? i need to check it out. I am a big fan of Sam's.
Yeah, it's fascinating how easy Sam controlled Jim despite being smaller man. Some of his power uppercuts reminded me George Foreman in this fight.
Nice review. It is interesting how small Langford looks next to Flynn, and of course later how small Flynn looked next to Johnson. Johnson would have been immensely bigger than Langford. A fun fight to watch with Langford impressive for the time.
Great find, I didn't know there was a video of any of their fights, must check it out. Do you know if it is one of the three fights from when they were both in their prime or is it from when both were way over the hill in the 1920's.
Ah ok. It's easy 2 get some of the rivalries among Johnson, Langford, Wills, Jeanette, and McVey mixed up. Langford fought Wills and Jeanette tons of times, and so did some of the others. It can get awfully confusing sometimes.
