GGG Returns This Friday...

This is boxing, the requirement for fights is that you make weight.

There are an infinite of examples of fighters making weight and then weighing in at a different weight limit on fight night. Even Golovkin weights in at the LHW, does that automatically mean GGG would be as effective at SMW than he was at MW? Absolutely not, he may, but he wouldn't get any slag from his fans if he moved up in weight and lost, why? Because despite weighing in at the LHW limits, even if he moved up to SMW, fought the reigning champ there and lost, we would all know that is not his division.

Fighters like Tim Bradley and Brandon Rios weighed in at MW on fight night, but they could never effectively compete there without acclimating.

Canelo beat Cotto and was awarded the titles for doing so. However, Canelo did challenge Golovkin to a Non-Title fight at 155 soon after. Considering that Canelo had never fought above 155 in a real fight, and considering that GGG said for years that he'd fight anyone between 154-168, I don't see how its not GGGs fault that he didn't accept that 155 catchweight. Similar to how he didn't accept Ward's challenge at 168 despite GGG saying for years that he would fight anyone between 154-168.

 

Your body don't rehydrate 20 lbs unless you were that big to begin with. Canelo was trying to make GGG come down to 155lbs, pretending GGG had a weight advantage and size advantage. Once people caught on to this they never showed Canelo's fight night weight again even to this day. Its ok to be a big jr middleweight but don't try to make the middleweight champ come down, Floyd was small Canelo was not.

 

Golovkin said, and I quote: I'll fight anyone from 154-168.

Canelo said, lets fight at 155.

Many Jr.MWs hydrate above 165 and above 170.

If GGG was claiming he'd fight at 154, then why not 155? Because he wanted every advantage, and that's fair, but to act like Canelo owed GGG anything, when GGG was the one passing up fights left and right while Canelo was in tough fight after tough fight.

I would agree that the fight made more sense at 160. But why didn't GGG go up to fight Ward?

From what I remember things were moving along quite well for GGG at middleweight. I think him and his people were thinking unify middleweight, get the Canelo super fight, beat Hopkins record, then possibly for a grand finale fight Ward, but Ward came out and said now or never, I'm moving up to the light heavyweight division, and was trying to run the show while not being much of a ticket seller. GGG fought Lemieux on ppv then Ward went up. GGG was not afraid , it just wasn't the right timing.

 

And i dont count interim title defenses either.

 

What near impossible feat is this? GGG had "20" title defenses in his first reign as MW champion. He lost all his belts to Canelo, then he fought Derev for a vacant title. His fight against the Can tonite is his 1st title defense in his second reign as MW champion. The 20 consecutive title defense record at MW still stands, and this record breaking mystical 21 title defense is bogus. YDKSAB
