Just reading a write-up about Canelo v Smith and Smith`s 7 inch reach advantage was mentioned, what were some other fights with this huge gap and how will this fight compare to that? This tread isn`t just about Smith and Canelo so I thought I`d put it in classic to get opinions on more historic bouts.
Mike Tyson had a measured reach of 71”. He fought a bunch of guys with reaches of 78” or more. Trevor Berbick- 78” Bonecrusher Smith- 82” Tony Tucker- 82” Tyrell Biggs- 80” Larry Holmes- 81” Tony Tubbs- 79” Frank Bruno- 82” Carl Williams- 85” Buster Douglas- 83” Razor Ruddock- 82” Evander Holyfield- 78” Lou Savarese- 80” Andrew Golota- 79” Lennox Lewis- 84”
Mike Tyson had a 71” reach and Carl Williams was listed at 85”. Lennox at 84”. Julius Long has a measured reach of 90”, so he’s probably fought some guys with huge disadvantages in reach.
So Hagler would have had an 8" reach advantage over Roberto then, Marvin's was freakishly long for his height. Was it something like 75"?
It's It's amazing how many times it's been demonstrated great skills can supersede average skills but superior weight, reach, and height . Yet so many fail to grasp that simple fact.
