Smith - a 6ft3 giant at the weight, who fights as a 5ft6 fighter, amazing coaching from Joe once again. We all seen this coming a mile away, Smith is so basic and has a bang average trainer, he never stood a chance. The only fighter I could see coming close to Canelo is a fit and motivated BJS, who could possibly out point him, but BJS has spunked his career away.
I predicted a comfortable points win for Canelo, but I didn't think it would be THAT easy. Smith wasn't able utilise any of his physical advantages and was bullied by the much smaller man. Canelo was just levels above Smith and is a joy to watch. He was able to close the distance between them effortlessly and seemed like he was able to hit Smith whenever he chose to, upstairs and downstairs. The only positives you could say about Smith was his determination to last the distance. He was visibly hurt a few times and thought he came close to going down or even stopped in the championship rounds. I think Canelo beats anybody at SMW. For his next opponent I'd like to see him up at light heavyweight to a get a proper test. Canelo vs Beterbiev would be an exciting match-up, but I think it's more likely he'll stay at SMW and pick up at least another belt there first. He would deal with Saunders or Plant pretty easily as well IMO. You can make a strong case for Canelo being P4P numero uno right now. Absolute quality fighter.
Smiths a good fighter but as most thought this was really a mismatch.and it would be the same with BJS if he gets the ginger ticket.
Callum Smith looked like a giant compared to Canelo from the DAZN camera angle and yet he chose to spend the whole fight backing off, going backwards and towards the end took a beating sitting on the ropes. That's fine if you have the footwork of Mayweather, Lara or even Billy Joe Saunders but Smith really gave himself no chance in that fight, despite having a pretty good first round. It's possible he injured his arm earlier in the fight and kept it to himself until the end of the 8th round, but he boxed to Canelo's strengths and was disappointing last night, and made it easy for Canelo to utilise his superior foot work and ring generalship. Kovalev did the same thing, yet Mayweather kept the centre of the ring for a lot of the fight, never really sat on the ropes and actually had Canelo backing up later in the fight. It was another great payday for a fighter who has way overachieved financially in his career, very similar to Bellew and I can see him retiring now, because unlike Bellew, Callum needs an opponent to sell the fight and make PPV type money. I actually think Billy Joe Saunders gives Canelo a tough nights work, especially for the first six rounds and if he can build momentum early might run him close like Lara.
Why, he's just been bullied by a midget WW. He needs to stay away from the big boys and stick to domestic fights.
Sure he has but imo making weight is now impacting him imo. How many times have we seen fighters who have moved up after staying at weight that impacts there performance/strength, perform a lot better afterwards as a result of not having to boil down to a weight they've been at since turning pro.
Didn't stay up for this, watched it this morning. It's not easy to get excited about a fight where the result is a foregone conclusion. The only question was would he go the full 12 rounds, he did so deserves some respect for that. Still quite strange to see a (very much) blown up welterweight backing up a giant super middle weight consistently 2nd round onwards, especially when whatever you think of Callum he does carry respectable power and can punch. Obviously Canelo didn't think so as he barely took a backwards step all night. As one sided as it was (had Callum Smith winning 1 round) I don't think Callum actually took as bad a bating as it looked. A lot of the shots the US pundits were going crazy about were partially blocked/deflected landing shots where a good 50% of the sting would have been taken out of them. There's still some good fights out there between Smith-Saunders-Eubank-Ryder so there's still plenty of big fights out there for him even without a belt.
I can see your point and agree about the belts. Maybe a little harsh, regards average British fighter, as styles do make fights, and Canelo is an absolutely awesome boxer. For me as a fan, this fight wasn’t that interesting as I genuinely believed Smith had very little chance. I wanted him to win, and watched it but going off his last performance with Ryder, gave him very little chance. Now if it had been Smith vs Saunders, wow, now I am interested. A very much 50/50 fight but no real marquee name. We need to get these domestic clashes on while British boxing is firing on four. I think we have reached the peak and are starting a slow decline. We have already lost Khan vs Brook, let’s not lose Saunders vs Smith vs Ryder. Too much greed hunting, not enough glory hunting.
