He was a great boxer and I'd recommend 'The Whitechapel Whirlwind' by John Harding to whoever has the vaguest interest in him. Great read.
His hero was Ted 'Kid' Lewis and adopted his name to pay respect to him, tried to make sure his career followed on the same tracks as Lewis. Both top 10 Jewish boxers for sure, how would people compare both of their careers ?.
One of the very best to lace them up. He was in an absolutely stacked era though so couldn't stand out the way other greats if his time have done. Plus his exploits in the LWW division are largely unrecognised because the division itself was largely unrecognised. But he easily has a greater LWW resume than Tszyu or Chavez even though you're unlikely to see him ranked above either due to ignorance or semantics.
So did I, Bob. Always been interested in Lewis' style, seems like as good a time as any to learn more!
Exactly. I eat books up. I do my best to grab as many autobiographies and biographies as I can. I've amassed a pretty nice collection through the decades. Would love to see some of the spanish language books translated
