I remember the rumor that some of their fights were fixed. The fight with Tubbs is an example.
    Thoughts??

Pretty good but not a top fighter despite his record. A lot of the better fighters he fought were getting on in years when he faced them.

Was he considered to fight for the title at some point?

A bit harsh, he was a smarter fighter than Eklund. Thus as you suggest, if it were possible, smart enough to avoid Bruno!

I hear Pollack is hard at work finishing a 3 volume set on Nielsen. I will await his judgement.

He got a bronze in the Olympics, but I guess it was a sound financial decision to fight stiffs in Denmark and cash out against Tyson rather than try to force a title shot and win in the US.

I had him losing clearly to 47 y.o. Larry Holmes. And it was a prime version of Nielsen, not 36 y.o. piece of lard that fought Tyson

Just playing devils advocate here he beat a helluva lot of mid 1980s american heavyweights.....the problem is he did it in the late 1990s...still its a great resume...

his fight with Tyson was epic, a grueling battle that brought out the best in both men.
Neilson refused to fold or go quietly.
Tyson had to brutally slay him like an evil dragon.
he was a fighter that the peoples of Europe could actually be proud of
