any proof or evidence that Liston really put linoleum on his gloves?

It's funny because I was just watching an old school Karate Movie where the two finals in a tournament were in a match, the champion was on the losing end and threw some powder into his opponents eye and blinded him. Immediately thought of this thread

I saw it in an interview. He said that Ali told him to cut the gloves, because he was going to prove that there was funny business going on. He had to talk Ali out of quitting.

Sorry, when I saw the interview, I never realized that decades later I would have to use it as a source, but it is the truth.

Hard to see it being done on purpose, I'd tend to agree it was an accident. Especially as both fights are theoried to have been fixed, unless it was fixed to the finish in a particular round, then Liston's corner would have reason to use it, but still eaiser to just take a dive like he did in the 2nd fight.

You could make a case it was not on putpose if it only happened once.

But why would they do it on purpose if the fight was a fix anyway. Liston was suffering from a bung shoulder, maybe it was a long term injury and they often used the liniment. Some people's eyes are more sensitive than others, could of been happening every fight, although a lot were getting sparked out before the substance could take effect. The only way I can see it done on purpose if it was a finish fight betting scam, and Liston got a bit of last minute pride so decided to try knock Ali out instead of him taking the dive but Liston's below par performance in the fight goes against that theory.

It really has the sound of something that Dundee and Ali would’ve grossly exaggerated.
