Pacquiao vs. De La Hoya: Sooner or later, boxing needs it

    Matt Ryan

The two biggest superstars need to collide.

The fall boxing lineup looks to be highly entertaining. Superstars Oscar De La Hoya, Manny Pacquiao, and Roy Jones Jr. each have bouts scheduled against TBA opponents, and HBO has already lined up several decent scraps between lesser names.
But despite the exciting potential, boxing still needs a jumpstart to excite more casual fans. That impetus would come from a Manny Pacquiao-Oscar De La Hoya fight.
As or right now, it looks unlikely that the Filipino and Mexican-American will square off. Pacquiao will fight on November 15 against Edwin Valero, and De La Hoya will probably throw down against Miguel Cotto or Felix Trinidad in early December. These potential fights will likely prevent any Pacquiao-De La Hoya bout in the fall. And considering the fact that De La Hoya has said his December fight will be his last, his fight with Pacman looks more unlikely than ever. But De La Hoya will want to go out with a win, and the chances of him doing so against Miguel Cotto are slim. Further, De La Hoya, the owner of Golden Boy Promotions, is his stable’s own biggest fighter. Without himself in the mix, his future will suffer.
De La Hoya will need one more bout after his December fight, and that bout needs to be against Pacquiao.
The matchup makes perfect sense. The two pugilists are the most popular of their kind in the world. Oscar, with his celebrity looks and slew of other talents, has attracted fans of all kinds; Pacquiao is the hero of the Philippines. If they squared off, millions of people across the world would intently watch.
The fight would likely be competitive as well. Pacquiao walks around at 150 plus pounds in between fights, and considering he’s carried his power up with him as he rises in weight, it would be interesting to see how he handled a welterweight frame. De La Hoya is not the great fighter he used to be, so it would be fascinating to see if he could keep the robust Filipino off of him.
Boxing needs this fight; I hope it happens.

Another Boxing writer shared the same views as mine. I told you guys, Things I've said and suggested make sense.

If Hoya ever fights a man smaller than Forbes he should be publicly stoned by Prescott himself. There is no honor whatsoever for Hoya if he stooped this low.

Exactly where in that article did the author say that Pacquiao would beat DLH at 147?

Did I say he mentioned it???

What we share with the author is that Pac-DLH is the Big event that needs to Happen. DLH makes PBF Bigger. DLH need to do the same for Pac coz Pac will be the face of Boxing when he finally retired. The Author also was mentioning that the fight will be competitive due to DLH's age and Pac's amazing Run to higher weights. That's way different than You and you're backup singers same tune that DLH will just KO Pac with no chance at all for Pac.

I understand your enthusiasm but Pac still needs to get through 135, 140, and 147 before facing Hoya and don't you think Hoya will be retired by then?:dead

Did you read the Article??? DLH has one fight left, that's the reason this fight needs to Happen before it's too late. Pac just Dominated Diaz. Same guy who beat Sta cruz, SC who beat Casa, Casa who beat Campbell, Campbell who beat JuanD. What more to Prove at 135??? Can't you see??? Pac was Calling Hatton Left & Right. But Hatton still wants his boring date with Paggi. Or maybe he's chickening out???

Yes, you said he shared the same view as you, a view that others thought you were wrong for.

See, you've been running around here lying or at the very least, twisting other posters thoughts to make yourself look good. Very few said that DLH and Pacquiao would never fight. We said you were crazy for thinking Pacquiao would win. We never said Hatton and Pacquiao wouldn't fight. We said we didn't think he would win. But you keep saying that you predicted the fights would take place and that everyone called you crazy.....see the difference? That's not what posters said at all.

And the author never said it would be competitive. All he said was DLH was not the fighter he once was and wondered if he could keep Pacquiao off of him. He never offered a view on the fight at all, whether it would be competitive or not. Again, you twisting someone's words to fit an agenda.

And lastly? The irony of you ever acting like I need backup. I watch you daily run into threads where Pinoys are arguing with other posters, and no matter what they say, you say "Wow, you owned him". I watched you and Johnco pat each other on the back for arguments that even other Pacquiao fans think you are getting thrashed in. And you want to act like it's ME who needs backup and cheerleading? Please....

This is a silly fight for Pacquiao, is he going to move all the way to Welterweight or light middleweight for this?, that's career ending right there for just 1 big-money fight, silly if you ask me. He has far more options at 135 and 140 and already laughed when asked if he'll make anything above 140 after his fight with Diaz.
