I’m a dead poster bro lol. I thought the top 15 series was going to rekindle my love for boxing, but not quite. Love this forum and the people though and I still watch daily, maybe I should give my two cents more often, but honestly I can’t remember the last time I watched a fight that wasn’t generic as **** wether it be current or classic boxing.
It’s been years man, but god damn you’re so right. It’s a shame I couldn’t watch it without knowing who had already won. Always makes me focus on the loser a little bit more often. I have only watched it once and thought it could have gone either way, however there’s probably a bit of bis on my part as my appreciation for Larry hadn’t matured when I did
I've watched that fight 2 or 3 times and its still exciting to watch. SO MANY fights out there that I wish I could watched without knowing the outcome from the start. Whats fun is to watch this fight with a friend or 2 and everyone scores it. Different outcomes most everytime.
Indeed! Foster is another one that was in the wrong place at the wrong time when he made the decision to fight HW. But such a great fighter he was!
Jimmy Ellis and Jerry Quarry fought on April 27 1968 for the vacant WBA Title after Muhammad Ali's conviction for Draft Evasion, it was a close fight, I believe Jimmy won a split 15 round decision.
Norton decision. Only Ali, Frazier and Shavers stopped Ellis and he went 15 with the likes of Patterson and Quarry and 12 with the likes of Lyle and Bonavena. A late stoppage isn't out of the question but IMO there's a fair chance he stays the route.
good point John; didn't think about that, and Norton was more passive than those three as well, although more powerful than Ali obviously
I think people are sleeping on Ellis. He was a very good boxer/puncher. Norton clearly had Ali's number. But Ken could look ordinary against a lot of boxers. Watch the first four rounds of Norton-Zanon again. Zanon had no chin and zero power, but he stayed off the ropes and jabbed, and Zanon gave him a boxing lesson ... until another of his comic KO losses. Jimmy Ellis was far superior to Zanon as a boxer and a puncher, and had a much greater chin, but the stategy was the same. Jab Norton. Work the body on the inside (which Ali never did). Keep pivoting away from the ropes (which Ali also didn't do). Norton drug his back foot like he had a weight chained to it. When Zanon spun away from him off the ropes, Norton had no footwork and couldn't do anything about it. I think Norton could certainly hurt or even stop Ellis, but I think Ellis could also find a ton of success against Ken. That's why I thought it was a toss-up.
