Does Poland Hold The Record For Pitting The Most Heavyweight World Title Challengers W/O A Win?

Six Poles have fought for a heavyweight world title without ever winning it for their nation. Is this a country record for most heavyweight challengers but no single champion?

Hmm, exactly how many countries have had a piece of the heavyweight championship? 1700-1900 it was basically just a British domestic title. 1900-1990 it was all Americans with the exception of the German heavyweight Max Schmeling and the Swede Ingmar Johansson. Prior to Lennox Lewis, it was the British who had the reputation for most defeated contenders I thought.

No wait. Tommy Burns was Canadian and Primo Carnera was Italian. Gerrie Coetzee was South African. Trevor Berbick was Jamaican. I didn't know Francesco Damiani from Italy had a piece of the crown. Who the **** is Michael Bentt? Herbie Hide I remember. I didn't know Frank Bruno held the WBC. Henry Akinwande held the WBO for the UK too. Then it's Klitschko's for the Ukraine, Corrie Sandes for South Africa again, Valuev, Povetkin, Ibragimov, and Maskaev for Russia, Liakhovich for Belarus, Chagaev for Uzbekistan, Haye for the UK, Stiverne for Canada, Lucas Brown put Australia on the board, Joseph Parker for New Zealand, and Manuel Charr for Syria. How many countries is that total? 15 out 195?

Makes me wonder how many Spanish and French contenders have failed to win the title.

France had Takam, Duhaupas...

 

Yes, all the guys and countries you mention, strong or weak, have all won a piece of an official title. Poland's six challengers, on the other hand, have not, which makes me wonder if that's a record (four of five Frenchmen have failed too, but the Polish have failed a little more unfortunately). Spain only had Uzcudun I believe.

I think its a record. I'd need to double check it but i am pretty sure.

As far as i know, Paulino Uzcudun was the only Spainard to fight for the title. So it can't be Spain. It can't be Italy either. So i am guessing its a record.

Carlos Takam (fought Joshua) and Lucien Rodriguez (fought Holmes) were French citizens but weren't born there. But, if people are counting Joe Bugner as British (he was born in Hungary), I guess you could include Takam and Rodriguez as French.

If so, France had Takam (Joshua), Rodriguez (Holmes), Georges Carpentier (fought Dempsey), Jean Marc Mormeck (fought Wlad), Johann Duhaupas (fought Wilder) ... and if Tony Yoka loses in a title bid, he will help France tie the Poles.

 

Your information is correct, Takam and Rodriguez for they fought under the flag of France and that's what matters in sports, ultimately. The flag you represent as it's that country that goes into the record books.
