educate me on him someone please.

can't find an early record for him to suggest that he had a right to fight for the heavyweight title (vs tommy burns - 1908)....what record is available states just two pro fights vs journeymen before burns...i know records of the era can be incomplete, why i am asking here.

he was promoted then as the south african heavyweight champion...but i remember reading somewhere that he was london born and bred and never been to south africa less fought there....unless theres a record to suggest he fought for that title on british ground or something.

he had a long enough career after the burns fight, although that of a journeyman...but long enough to make me think there must be more background to him that just two fights before burns.

Despite his nickname and Mendoza stating he was Jewish and a South African, Smith was born in Spitalfields ,lived in Aldgate London was Church Of England Protestant and never visited South Africa.
Smith was short for a heavy, but very powerful, strong ,and willing without science, his best win was a decision over crude power puncher Iron Hague.
Smith was beaten by both Joe Jeannette and Jim Johnson , he was domestic level and an easy defence for Burns.

I know he wasn't, I was married to a Jewess for 25years and I can tell you categorically that anyone using that epiphet describing a Jew would receive a right hander from them.
I know that Smith was married in a C of E church!
You got that from that stupid book by the Canadian idiot who didn't even know that Tommy Burns was Canadian and had been champion I corrected all the lies and mis- information in it before.
Lies like Smith was South African ,lies like Burns broke Johnson's ribs, lies like Burns defended against a native American , don't come on here infecting another thread with your bigotry you've f*cked enough threads up .

Start one yourself about Smith's origins and I'll rip you to pieces on that, you've nothing to add to this thread. So show some respect to the OP Dougie he's a good guy who posts some top stuff, now f*ck off.

Mendoza took his piece from an idiot called Dan MCafferty see link below.
Its a "book" full of b*llsh*t,and badly researched cr*p.
He says things like Johnson was in his prime ,as though he Burns was not.Burns was 27 ,3 years younger than Johnson .
If you ever want to know about Tommy Burns ,and he was an interesting character, buy Adam Pollack's biography of him ,don't waste money on this trash.

Hi everyone - I thought I would set the record straight. Jewey Smith was my Great Grandfather. He was born Joseph Goldblum. He was indeed Jewish, his father was Rev. Simon Goldblum who had come over from Poland as young man by cargo boat to Hull, which is where he spent his childhood. Joseph married Florence (Florie Shibko) and their marital home was a 2 up 1 down in Wyndham Street/Road in Hull. He definitely was not married in a Church of England, but I did find that rather funny. They had one son, my Grandfather Manuel. Joseph was a Sargent during WW1 and after being attacked by mustard gas, was sent home. He then joined the Merchant Navy. I hope that clears up a few things :) Thank you all for keeping his memory alive.

Well, what do you know? Whatshisname is wrong. Dan McCaffery (not James McCafferty) wrote his book BECAUSE he knew Burns was Canadian. So wrong again. As for the story of Johnson's bruised ribs, I recall a contemporary account that Johnson did check into a local Sydney hospital to be checked over. Considering Tommy's kayo record I don't see why it would be difficult to believe that he could have landed hard enough on Johnson to cause some damage. After all, little Stan Ketchel managed to knock big bad Jack down and Joe Choynski, a light heavyweight, knocked Johnson out.

Most definitely English. Very funny reading some of the stuff you guys are writing about my great grandfather.

Anyone needs any personal facts, i'm the one to ask.

Born in Spitalfields, Lived in Aldgate, Married to Sarah, had two children, Helena (age 101) and Cissie (age 99), both still living.[2013].
Immediately after the Burns fight Johnson went for a swim, which of course you would be inclined to do if you had broken ribs.
NB. I and others wrote negative reviews of McCafferty's book on Amazon they have been removed ,and only one positive review , from a fellow Canadian, remains.Further reviews are now disallowed .Anyone wishing to learn aboutTommy Burns would be well advised to buy Adam Pollack's biography and give a wide berth to McCafferty's comic.

Apparently there was more than one Jewey Smith because he was MY grandfather (I am named after him). His real name was Jacob Cohen. He was married to Rebecca Rubin. They had 5 boys (Joseph, Harry, Leonard, Herman and Martin). I have access to the original enlarged fight photo (approximately18' x 24") plus photos of him when he was about 40 and when he was about 60. He was jewish and supposedly faught in the Boer war. He died in New York in 1946. He was not from South Africa.
