Lol how big was Dempsey again ? Little mans getting mauled. Even if we scale dempsey up to heavyweight and theoretically put him at 6'1 220 lb or some **** he's still not winning. Heavyweights has evolved since Dempseys time. World class boxers now are much more technically sound. Anthony Joshua is LEVELS beyond Jesse Willard despite the fact that they're the same size.

To be real boxing even from the 50s is considerably more evolved than boxing from the 1910s and 20s

Now Sonny Liston vs Anthony Joshua thats a good match up

190 lbs. that’s all I’m gonna say. AJ took bombs from a top 5 puncher in heavyweight history. Will Dempsey even land anything concrete before being sparked? Probably not.

I wish Perry/HOUDINI had explained why he felt qualified to make such broad generalizations about a whole generation of American boxing trainers.

I think it probably started in childhood. Probably an over indulgent mother or nanny.

But that's the tactic of these wannabe historians: making unsubstantiated claims about how boxing today sucks, compared to the "good old days" - which they believe make them sound like real experts.

Willard was the same size as AJ and he was durable if nothing else. Learn your history.

AJ is not a "sharp" puncher by any stretch of the imagination. He is heavy handed and throws with good leverage and form for a buff lifter, but he most definitely is not a sharp or explosive hitter. Rather, he is a technically sound clubber that throws good combinations with good weight behind them.

Joshua is far better than Willard, which is why I think he beats Dempsey. His chin is also demonstrably worse than Willard's which is why, given Joshua's trouble with dealing with Ruiz' speedy punching, I think Dempsey would have a decent chance at cracking it.

Dempsey is smaller then some LHW’s today, his power may also be a product of the thin gloves and smaller less skilled opposition of his time I think he is honestly mostly a folk hero at this point.

What do we see in him? a legend that cannot he taken from him, I don’t know about his chances today though I hope he would do well as he’s a personal hero of mine.

Maybe not. Although the Ruiz wingspan is listed as 1" more, I am sure you will agree that he also has a somewhat broader chest.
Wingspan involves more than length from the shoulder to the fist; it includes fingers & the whole chest breadth.
So I believe Dempsey likely had a greater reach.

The problem for Dempsey would include his prime weight being in the 180's.
Unless you build him up into something he was not, that would be like a modern day rehydrated LHW.

It would be very difficult for anyone with this lack of weight & muscle mass to beat a skilled SHW.

Dempsey for me ,AJ seems to fall apart under sustained pressure.
