Who Would You Pick over Roy Jones Jr. at 160?

Robinson and Monzon would be very good candidates. For some reason I also think Hearns would be a tough fight stylistically and physically. Tommy was tall, rangy and could hit

who was RJJ before Jones was even thought of.

 

Hearns is interesting, I'd bet on Roy though.
Hagler would be the best bet, as long as he stays aggressive. A super aggressive middleweight with a great chin has the best chance of beating Roy at 160.

 

I pick Hagler, Robinson, Hearns to win. Possibly Monzon and Nunn but difficult to say

 

I thought Roy was spectacular at 160 and 168. Hard for me to rate him against middleweight greats because he wasn't at that weight for very long.

Head to head, though, I think he'd fare well against anyone from the time I started following boxing (1978/79). Hearns might have been the most difficult for him. Hagler would be tough, but Jones might be able to frustrate him with speed and movement.

 

Greb definately deserves to be in the conversation .. And I'd probably make him the favorite

 

I can really only pick Hagler. I’m surprised to see so many picks for Hearns and Robinson, I think they both get beaten up.

 

No single man is a comfortable pick, he was very large much larger then most MW’s unfairly so pair that with being freakishly athletic and we have a problem for our favourite legends.

If Hagler sees red and decides to bore through fire and flames to get to Roy’s chin taking extreme punishment, then it’s a possibility that he comes out of the storm to KO RJJ but I see no other pick at this moment.

 

i think Hagler with his constant pressure and ability to take a punch would be too much for an inexperienced Roy Jones. Just look at what a southpaw Lou del valle was able to do.. Lou is nowhere near as good a southpaw as Hagler was.

 

At 160 you say? Well I'd certainly give Hopkins a shot, though I'd always favor Jones at that weight. Jones didn't fight the very best Hopkins when they met in 94.......that would have been the 2000-2001 version.
I don't just look at these hypothetical matchups between greats as one and dones, I see them as 3 or 4 fight series.
And I see Hopkins splitting the series with Jones.
It's also very hard to say who beats "at 160" specifically. He looked spectacular at that weight, but it was such a miniscule portion of his career. How do you compare that with a lifelong 160 pound fighter ?

 

Greb,Steele,Hagler,Monzon,Robinson.I'd give Tiger,Giardello,Alvarez good chances too.

 

Jones at his best was 168 and not 160.

 

I could envisage him losing to a few guys, but I honestly wouldn’t have favoured anybody over him in a one off fight.

The version of him who fought Thomas Tate was 25 and in his prime.

He fought Tate just before he fought Toney. So the version who fought Toney was essentially the same fighter.

I could see Marvin beating him. But I could also see how Roy’s speed and unorthodox style would have caused him huge issues.

Leonard was a better P4P fighter, but was too small for Roy. Roy would have been a SMW-LHW on fight night.

Greb would be in the running.

Robinson was a better P4P fighter but was past his absolute peak at WW. And again, Roy would have been much bigger, heavier and fresher.

From what I’ve seen of Monzon he’d have been too slow.

I think you’ve got to be looking at Greb, Marvin, Hearns and Nunn.

Hearns had the size to box him and the huge power to knock him out.

Nunn would have been a very tough stylistic match up for him.

I’d have given Mike McCallum a chance against a green version of Roy at JMW-MW, but not the mature version who fought Tate, and who’d beaten Hopkins and knocked out Malinga.

Gerald would have had a punchers chance.

I honestly couldn’t have favoured anybody.

If you took the Tate version of Roy, it’s essentially the guy who fought Toney.

A MW Robinson was great but past his prime with many miles on the clock.

Hagler would have been very interesting.

Would Marvin have definitely have fought him hard and aggressive though?

I think that he may have been cautious of Roy’s speed and unorthodox style.

Also, Roy didn’t voluntarily go to the ropes a lot when he was younger.
