Who really won the GGG vs Canelo Fight

Canelo is probably my favorite boxer to watch, but GGG got him in the first fight. The way GGG took the ring away and applied pressure was artistic!

Second fight I had Canelo just edging GGG though. Both fights were absolute slugfests!

GGG won both fights by different styles. In the second fight Canelo lost his soul after being heavily hit.

Both fights took a lot from both fighters and required a serious preparation and in case of Canelo it also involved clentuberol masking something else...

 

I scored the first fight 7-6 GGG (gave him 1, 5, 7, 8, 10, and 11 & counted 6 as a draw), but 3 of his rounds were close enough that a draw is a perfectly acceptable outcome.

Having rewatched the fight recently, I was shocked by how rarely Golovkin was able to touch Canelo even though he had him on the ropes for most of the fight. Instead of fighting ugly and forcing the issue, he kept jabbing ineffectively at middle range which allowed Canelo to show off his head movement & slipping ability. Had GGG gone inside & thrown some ****ing uppercuts, Canelo might have been knocked THROUGH those ropes.

Interesting scorecard, I like that you recognized that Canelo won round 4. This shows you paid close attention and didn't just give it to GGG because he did better than rounds 2 and 3. Scoring round 6 even is very fair as that was a very hard round to score. Now I'm glad that BCS8 bumped this topic as we are finally seeing posters share some reasonable round by round cards.

Will have to watch round 9 again to see what may have caused you to score that to Canelo a round that most saw as a GGG round. Must have had a lot to do with that big right hand that Canelo landed on GGG in the middle of the round. GGG landed some good shots as well this round but that right hand by Canelo was definitely the best punch of the round.

The only rounds I would really disagree with you on is rounds 1, 10 and 11, I thought those were pretty strong Canelo rounds but like you said several of the rounds you scored for GGG could be interpreted differently. Maybe these are the 3 you are referring to. Anyway, thanks for posting your card. Very interesting to see a fresh and fair perspective of how close it was and how hard many of these rounds were to score instead of the usual "GGG won clearly there's no way you can argue Canelo won" nonsense.

 

Not actually, but it was close. Certainly arguable either way. The main thing is just coming to an understanding that it was very close and debatable as to who won. And putting an end to the myth that GGG clearly won and was robbed.

 

Yes I know, good of you to bump this topic though, it is refreshing to see posters come in and back me up on rounds that I saw Canelo winning like round 4 which you dismissed as unreasonable.

It's all subjective of course and open to interpretation, but even interpreting it as a "close but clear" GGG win is still far from a "robbery". For a result to be a "robbery" it can't be even remotely close. There's far too many hard to score rounds that still are being hotly debated to this day to argue that it was easy to score which is needed for something to be deemed a robbery. And also the fact that a robbery typically involves a fighter losing something, typically a belt. Of course GGG didn't officially lose, and wasn't stripped of his title.

The harder more impactful shots were laned by Canelo. The more impressive boxing skill on display was done by Canelo. Canelo was the ring general. GGG was more active though, which he needed to be since e couldn't land enough clean punches. It's a classic case of quality vs quanity. Is it better to land a couple more glancing shots or is it better to slip punches make a fighter miss and land the more telling shots?

 

Canelo fought a highly intelligent fight and he made believers out of many who doubted him who went into the match thinking he had no chance. Canelo made a statement, GGG was exposed as overhyped and not as skilled as Canelo.

Canelo won rounds 1-4 & 10-12. That's 7 rounds right there. Rounds 5 and 6 could also be scored for Canelo. I gave GGG round 5 for finally doing something, but even Round 5 is very debatable as Canelo was well ahead after the first 2 minutes. It was only in the final minute that GGG arguably stole the round by landing that shot with Canelo on the ropes and finishing the round decently. Round 6 very hard to score, still not sure about who won that, probably best to score that even. Rounds 7-9 GGG outworked Canelo but Canelo landed the better shots. (I still gave GGG rounds 7-9)
