My third and final Loughran fight for the night, w/ the rounds as scored: 1-Close, but neither was able to land much, but I gave Loughran the round for having more control of the round due to clinching. 2-Loughran did so much clinching in this round that I wouldn't even give him the round. Even. 3-Right off in this round Sharkey dropped Loughran w/ a right hook. Loughran got up, but the fight was stopped. The hook that dropped Loughran did not look all that hard to me, so I ended up not being impressed by Sharkey's power in this fight. I wasn't impressed w/ the apparent quality of Loughran's chin either. Verdict: Not a significant fight by any means.
It was definitely significant, it was part of what lead to his title fight with Schmeling. In terms of the KO how many others did that to Loughran? It's not really about power, but being able to land a big punch.
Well, you're right. I forgot about those things. Still, the knockout itself is not very entertaining.
I view this fight in the same way I view Nunn vs Kalambay, or Hill vs Tiozzo II. I see it as a fluke result, but that's not to say you can't give credit to the winner. It's a great win for Sharkey (although not as great as Loughran's over Sharkey, IMO), but I think the unlikelihood of early KO makes people gloss over it and dismiss it as a sort of fluke.
My take is the first two rounds were close. "I ended up not being impressed by Sharkey's power in this fight." Overall, Sharkey doesn't show knockout power that often. I can't see not being impressed in this one when he took out Loughran with one right hand. That said, my reaction is wondering about the ropes. Loughran goes down awkwardly and the back of his head hits the rope. It is believed then featherweight champion Davey Moore died in 1963 from the back of his head hitting the rope when he was knocked down by Sugar Ramos. Is it possible that hitting the rope concussed Loughran? Just a thought, but Sharkey does deserve full credit here. For his career, Loughran was a very durable fighter, which is what makes this KO so out of form and leads me to my speculation about the rope.
I don't know a lot about this era, but I do love my heavyweight history and don't much like fantasy fights, so I'm really enjoying this series of threads, William.
Bravo, man! Glad you get a kick out of them. I won't fail you. More on the way this very night in fact.
Not particularly. Not willingly though. You see, I don't have much of a clue of how tough Loughran was. I've watched three fights, but against Walker and Braddock, he took no big shots. From Braddock he took none at all. If I knew that Loughran was a tough guy, my opinion of Sharkey thus far would probably go up seriously. Rn however, Loughran 1 is just a good paper win for Sharkey, to me.
The only other times Loughran was stopped, was when he was 17, and late in his career when he was past his best. I think it was much more due to his defence than his chin though.
He kept his chin up and never moved his head except for the occasional ducking movement. His only defense was movement, catching the left hook by haphazardly sticking his forearm up next to his head (should have done it like Ezzard Charles did or like Robinson did in the Turpin rematch), and the occasional ducking movement. Limited.
