    Louie Espinoza v Julio Gervacio

Let me first start by saying I looooooooved this fight!!!

    Round 1: 10-9 Gervacio
    Round 2: 10-9 Gervacio
    Round 3: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 4: 10-10 Even
    Round 5: 10-10 Even
    Round 6: 10-9 Gervacio
    Round 7: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 8: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 9: 10-9 Gervacio
    Round 10: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 11: 10-9 Gervacio
    Round 12: 10-8 Gervacio (scores a knockdown)

Total: 116-113 Gervacio (actual scores: 116-112, 116-113 and 117-114 all for Gervacio)

Every round seemed to go by so quick for me that I had to check that they weren't shortened rounds. They weren't. Every round was 3 minutes and I was enjoying the hell out of them. It just flew by. This was such a beautiful blend of Gervacio's sharp, speedy combos and Espinoza's harder punching. What was great for me was that I actually had forgotten who had won this fight, so I had no stats to linger in the old noggin. I was just watching a good fight. Espinoza really looked like he was going to end this fight after the 7th and 8th rounds. Gervacio appeared to be coming apart at the seams, wilting badly under Louie's body shots and head-rockers. But then Louie went into La-La land in the 9th and let Gervacio back into the fight. I was yelling to dig in those body-shots, but he allowed Gervacio to get that second win and the Dominican finished better down the stretch. Nothing hometown about this decision (I know Gervacio was from the DR but he seemed to fight out of Puerto Rico). Highly recommend this fight for a beautiful style matchup.

    Fight 5: Ioka vs Reveco

    1:9-10
    2:10-9
    3:9-10
    4:9-10
    5:10-9
    6:9-10
    7:9-10
    8:10-9
    9:10-9
    10:10-9
    11:9-10
    12:10-9

Ioka has now moved on form his loss to Ruenroeng and is challenging secondary belt holder Reveco.

This is an extremely close fight. Ruenroeng made Ioka look very uncomfortable forcing him to fight on the front foot with his range and sharpshooting. Reveco does the exact opposite here with his volume and pressure forcing Ioka onto the back foot, but again he's made to look very uncomfortable.

Ioka looks excellent when he's the ring general but when he's forced into fighting the other guys fight he looks hapless and just kinda goes through the motions.

This has been massively exposed at flyweight when he's in against men who can match his physicality.

I mean I know Ioka got the result here but he must have had to have gone back to the drawing board, he's gone from being the next big thing to someone who's looked less than ordinary on both the front and now the back foot. And against men who were not considered the number 1.

Not a robbery, but this should be recognised as an extremely close fight that could have gone either way.

    114-114

Despite being faded, I remember thinking Johnson should've won this clearly, but I can't really remember the fight's details. Figured it was due a rewatch, so I stuck it on this morning.

Early on, Johnson is throwing the better jabs but seems to not be landing. He's putting together some nice shots off the jab though, with a short lead hook, and a weirdly-angled right uppercut. Pastrano showing crazy speed of foot and a same with his hands. Impressive start for both, Pastrano landing a bit cleaner in the first, whereas Johnson seemed to get the better of the second and third. Both of these guys were really quick, especially with their hands. Johnson's head-movement was quick and slippery, but his feet had slowed. Pastrano's feet are rapid, but rapid in sort of non-explosive way. He reminds me - speed wise - of Katsunari Takayama, unbelievably quick, but lacking that same snap of a Roy Jones Jr.

Johnson's offense is quite misunderstood IMO. People often paint him as not much more than a jab-jab-jab guy like a Virgil Hill. He showed an awesome ability to string shots together, to the body and the head. A sneaky left hook and cross-counter, as well as not being shy of the uppercut. He's definitely the one throwing better through the mid-rounds here, if anything it's Pastrano who's relying on the jab. Their workrates both seemed to slow, but their overall speed didn't. It got a bit worse late, but I think that was more to do with Johnson taking over, rather than due to fatigue.

    Kevin Kelley v Louie Espinoza

Knowing both fighters so well, I really don't know why I was expecting anything different and it certainly wasn't. Pretty much 12 rounds of Kelley pop-pop-popping away at the somewhat upright Espinoza. Even engaging him at times for the bouts only excitement. No sense running a card here. I gave Espinoza the 3rd round and a share of rounds 1 and 8 for a score of 119-111 for Kelley (actual scores: 119-109 and two scores of 118-110 all for Kelley). I really enjoyed Louie's bout with Julio Gervacio and I think I needed to see another, but styles and age enter into a fight. I would not recommend this unless you're looking to create a highlight video of Kelley.

Wow, I always assumed this would be a great fight. If you're looking for awesome fights from Espinoza, I'd say look no further than the Paez fights.

George, I had watched his first fight with Paez on your recommendation previously and thought it was great. Need to check out the rematch now. Currently checking out something else now, but that's next on the hit-list. BTW, you wouldn't be disappointed if you see his fight with Gervacio. I just loved that blend of styles of classy boxing, sharp hitting and thumping shots. It was so enjoyable.

Watched Gatt-Ward I again. God I love that fight so goddamn much. I decided to score it round by round for the first time on paper and in a new perspective.

    Gatti -- Ward
1: 10-9 Gatti outboxed Ward (slow starter)
2: 10-9 Gatti better effective punches
3: 9-10 CLOSE Ward got it for the harder and effective blows. Ward found the ribs.
4: 8-10 Ward turns it up at around 2mins in, -1 to Gatti for low blow
    5: 9-10 Awesome Round
6: 10-9 Gatti outworked Ward good
7: 10-9 Respect when they don't hit each other on break
8: 9-10 Ward ends the round strong to take the round for me
9: 8-10 A masterpiece. Ward ended strong to take the round from being a 9-9. BODY SHOTS.
10: 10-9 Amazing ending, Gatti lead, ending was close but overall Gatti

    TOTAL: 93-95 WARD

Gregorio Peralta v Wayne Thornton I

New York scoring on a rounds basis

    Round 1: Thornton
    Round 2: Thornton
    Round 3: Peralta
    Round 4: Thornton
    Round 5: Peralta
    Round 6: Even
    Round 7: Peralta
Round 8: Even (Best round of the fight)
    Round 9: Thornton
    Round 10: Even

Total: 4-3-3 Thornton (actual scores: 6-4 and 6-3-1 both for Peralta and a score of 5-4-1 for Thornton for a split win for Peralta)

This fight was as good a Draw as I have seen, despite my score. Thornton started out so well by being the busier fighter. But Peralta slowly increased his work rate and was stronger (isn't every Argentine?) and hit harder and they both let it hang out in the 8th. Any of those scores are correct. So many close rounds. Hated to see anyone lose this one after the way they fought.

    Fight 6: Ioka vs Sosa

Ioka pitched a shut out here and looked back to his best.

He dominated behind split second timing and pin point accuracy. In fact he never had to get out of second gear.

I know the level of opponent was lower but this is Ioka doing what he does best.

Those crisp sharp punches are a thing of beauty.

    Up next the Reveco rematch.

3: 10-8 HARD KNOCKDOWN FROM GATTI, a brief rally by Ward, but not enough.
4: 9-10 Better pace set by Ward this round.
5: 10-9 Strong ending from Gatti after a very rough start.
    6: 10-9 Ward get's low blowed a lot.
    7: 10-9 Strong Gatti round
    8: 10-9 Great Body Shots
    9: 9-10 CLOSE ROUND
10: 9-10 Cleaner shots get the round.

    Fight 7: Ioka vs Reveco

This is exactly how he should have fought first time round. He punched with much more authority, held his ground when Reveco rushed forward, didn't lose his composure and he relied on his strength which is those accurate well timed shots.

Very pleasing to see he also committed to the body attack throughout which eventually saw him score the ko.

As impressive as this performance is, you have to remember at this time he's certainly got no argument for being amongst the best FLW fighters in the world. Ruenroeng would still give him absolute fits and Estrada is clearly a level above. Not to mention the current king of the division Gonzalez.

Good performance but it should be against this level of opponent.

Concluded the Gatt-Ward Trilogy in full. Gatti earned that win.

    Gatti -- Ward
1: 9-10 Strongest start by Ward
2: 10-9 Low blows on Gatti for the first time.
3: 10-9 Dominate round by Gatti
4: 9-10 GATTI BREAKS HIS HAND AND WARD DOES MAJOR DAMAGE!
5: 10-9 Great turnaround by Gatti at the end of the round.
6: 8-10 Late knockdown that hurt Gatti bad.
    7: 10-9 This round is Fight III's 9th round.
8: 10-9 Strong round by Gatti but he was in pain while doing it.
9: 10-9 Leading round by Gatti, Ward shows his age in this round.
10: 10-9 Close but more damage from Gatti. Better Jab.

    TOTAL: 96-93 FOR GATTI

Stats about the trilogy and my scoring
Gatti won 19 Rounds and Ward won 11
Gatti's total score was 286 and Ward was 280
Ward had 2 (1 knockdown in round 9 in Bout 1, 1 knockdown in round 6 in Bout 3)
Gatti had 1 (1 knockdown in round 3 of Bout 2)
-1 Point Penalized by Gatti (Low blow in round 4 of bout 1)

George, I checked out their rematch today and it was quite a good fight.

Jorge Paez v Louie Espinoza II

    Round 1: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 2: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 3: 10-10 Even
    Round 4: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 5: 10-9 Paez
    Round 6: 10-10 Even
    Round 7: 10-9 Paez
    Round 8: 10-9 Paez
    Round 9: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 10: 10-10 Even
    Round 11: 10-9 Espinoza
    Round 12: 10-9 Paez

Total: 116-115 Espinoza (actual scores: 2 scores of 115-113 for Paez and 1 score of 115-113 for Espinoza for a split win for Paez.)

You can't argue too much with all of our scores because this was damn close and the styles make for a judging headache. Espinoza fights a steady fight whereas Paez fights in spurts and flash so it is up to the judge on what impresses one. For example, I heard Ferdie Pacheco saying in the 8th round that the 3 judges had the 7th round 1-1-1 (how he would know that I don't know, unless I misunderstood) and that he had it wide for Paez, whereas I had it very closely for Paez. So interpretation is all over the place. But despite the scores, it was a good fight. I was yelling for Louie to put Paez under pressure because if you took your foot off the gas and allowed Paez to move forward, that was his playground where he would leap in with his flashy punches. An enjoyable fight.
