I’d rate his Chin around a 7.5-8. When he was in peak shape he was always roaring forward and tough as hell. Being stopped by Foreman doesn’t mean Jack, try running in to Foreman like Frazier did and let me know how that works out for ya. Ali may not be a big puncher, but he’s a sharp accurate puncher that puts together strong combinations and Frazier just kept walking thru them. Frazier’s style meant you were gonna get some shots in on him so he took plenty of shots in his career and only Foreman made a serious dent. Frazier was a relentless offensive machine boring in and eating your shots for lunch, guys with weak chins wouldn’t have gotten very far like that. His chin was tough enough, and he was as tough as they come.
Inside fighters/swarmers have to at least have above average chins in general to have success or at least have extremely good defense to avoid getting nailed. Especially at heavyweight. It doesn't even make logical sense for Frazier to have a weak chin with his style applying relentless pressure. People try to have it both ways and say Frazier had bad defense but if that was the case and he also had a weak chin, there is no way in hell he'd have gotten that far inside fighting.
Smoking Joe Frazier had a pretty good chin, he was decked twice in the same round against Oscar Ringo Bonavena on Sept 21 1966, but Joe continued for the decision win. Took bombs against the likes of George Chuvalo in 1967 and Manuel Ramos in 1968, as well as counter punching Jerry Quarry in June 1969. Joe, as I have mentioned, fought like a runaway locomotive in his prime.
Right, a guy like Frazier got hit hard, often while he was punching and often by punches he didn't see coming. JF was offense first, he had a decent defense, but he was aggressive and trying to attack, fighters who are defensive get more credit for having great chins, but they usually see what is going to hit them and they can evade, brace, or ride with the punch. Guys like Frazier and even Shavers are considered by many to have questionable "chins" because they got knocked down or out, but their aggressive attitude/style of fighting left them open to punches that they didn't see coming.
I agree with Showstopper, although I would hold Joe in higher regard than 6/10. I think Joe was just short of the group of the toughest of all-time, more B level though. I mean, Foreman and Ali were the only two men to ever beat him. And after just ten pro fights he spent pretty much his entire career beating A and B level fighters. I would say Joe had an 8/ 10 chin.
Great point about Shavers. Many seem to think he had a glass jaw. He didn't. His chin was solid. His stamina was the problem. For example in his bout with Lyle, he stood toe to toe with Lyle, taking numerous hard shots and didn't flinch. It was only after he blew his tank he was knocked out. All his KO losses, were the result of him gassing out with the exception of Quarry when he was hit with about 30 or so clean power punches.
I would have no issue with someone labeling it "very good". He took sustained punishment against Ali (and only wore down once) and Quarry was no slouch in the power department. Not many would have survived the George Foreman he fought and the way he was getting up was pretty impressive.
One of the greatest chins in heavyweight history. He walked through Quarry who was an excellent puncher. Trucked Jimmy Ellis. Neither of those guys were known as light hitters. Bonevena was a pretty good puncher as he proved in 1966 knocking Joe down. Manuel Ramos was a hard hitter from Mexico on an 18 fight winning streak. Ali used to marvel at Frazier's chin. He often wondered how a man could go walk through shots like that. Ali was fortunate he never to take those clean shots. He couldn't of taken the punches Frazier took.
Frazier had pretty solid whiskers. Even Godzilla would have gone down against George Foreman if he was being hit constantly with barely a shot missing. Too much gets made of the Foreman fights when it comes to rating Joe's chin. The punishment he took from Muhammad Ali was unbelievable ! Muhammad may not have been a banger like George but he hit solidly and frequently enough.
Frazier's chin was solid. Too much emphasis is put on the Foreman fights without looking at the bigger picture.
Frazier had a great chin and great defense for a pressure fighter. He just had the misfortune of fighting a boxer that was practically made to beat him, and his style in Foreman. A prime example of how a certain style or physicality can completely nullify a fighter is Hearns vs Duran. Hearns was made to beat Duran, does anyone think Duran DIDN'T have a great chin? Consider he fought other fighters that could bang like Hagler and Barkley at a much higher weight than when he fought Hearns. Sometimes a fighter just has another fighters number. Doesn't mean he didn't have a great chin. In fact, history of those fighters would suggest otherwise.
