    Leon Spinks, the only man to ever beat Muhammad Ali when he was Champion and take his heavyweight crown from him in the ring. RIP.

    I appreciate Spinks for beating Ali...I liked the guy,...but it's a stretch calling him "great".

    Leon Spinks was a class act, good fighter, Olympic champion, proud marine, and a caring individual whose dream came true one night in 1978.

    He's a "coulda been," though. He might conceivably have beaten Ali in the rematch had he trained, stayed off the booze and drugs, and had a consistent corner. Regardless, he could have won some of those big heavyweight fights, like Coetzee, and certainly had a good cruiser career.

    His demons just got the better of him.

    Agreed. He was definitely the more skilled out of the brothers. Michael just held it all together much better.

    Its 1 of boxing greatest songs....and fitting that the maestro who runs that channel...makes these boxer videos...of all the boxers he chose to pair it with he chose the great Leon Spinks.Rip.

    As you say both these great fighting brothers suffered terrible terrible events in life....Michael with his wife's death....Leon's teenage son.....both have tremendous class.....thats why I took distaste at the circus carnival depiction of early pro Leon in some newspaper tributes.....he lived a long very productive life.....was clean for decades after....raised a world champion son too.....v rare achievement

    Good point. I followed boxing when Spinks was active, and no way was he great. He got lucky to beat an aging Ali, and otherwise, for the most part was a fringe contender/journeyman-type fighter.

    He is really a sad cautionary tale...a small heavyweight in the era when 210 or bigger was becoming the norm the cruiserweight division was non existent....Spinks was a helluva fighter who got used to squeeze another few bucks out of Ali....he never developed into a real pro he was in the deepend early and barely tread water well enough to keep his nostrils in the air.....not the smarter fighter like Michael...he never really had a chance post boxing....I hated seeing Saad Muhamed beat him up Leon deserved better and when he was used up he was dropped like a rock by the boxing fraternity.....I did not know he was living in Nevada last I knew he was barely getting by somewhere in Nebraska

    Really? Fringe contender/journeyman types win Olympic gold in the 70's against the Soviets and Cubans? He was a very talented fighter that had a short prime due to drug and alchohol abuse. He could absolutely fight.
