Haven't watched this in a while but really enjoyed Rummy's work ... Manny made some very interesting , definitive statements :

    1. Ali over Louis ... Muhammad was the perfect model of what were Louis' worst nightmares and would have defeated him H2H ... Manny said Louis' management by design kept him away from movers through out his careered the ones he fought like a small Conn and Walcott gave him trouble.

    2. A prime , late 1950's Liston was so devastating he'd pick him over a prime Ali .. he flat out says Lisrton was much older than believed and was no longer the fighters he was in the late 50's after he won the title ..

Many other interesting points but these two stand out ..

Steward was never a fan of Ali saying Ali couldn`t punch which was why he always thought Lewis would have gone on to become greater than Ali, which was bull despite Steward being a great trainer.

He rates Ali as the best heavyweight ever so he must like him a little bit.

I just listened to this in it’s entirety the other day and it was really interesting as most anything that came out of Manny’s mouth was. Rummy did a terrific job interviewing as well.

I did read someone on here say Steward didn’t rate Rocky Marciano based off this video I believe but I found Manny to be very gracious towards him in this while acknowledging the limitations his size and speed would pose against later heavyweights. I think that’s a lot different to not thinking he was much good though.

Great stuff. Listened to it while hitting the bag. Pretty much agree with everything he says tho he doesn't seem especially versed in Jack Johnson.

Manny is the guy miss most in the sport.

I don't see much basis for saying Louis avoided movers.

Funnily enough I revised this yesterday. It's a great piece. Stewart (Steward, Steward, Steward :sisi1) has always been my favourite trainer, and I love his commentary. I enjoyed his answers on some of these guys a lot. Especially with his views on Foreman, Liston and Bowe.

We can only thank @Rumsfeld for getting the interview and knowing how to get answers out of Manny, and Manny for being well, Manny.

Wow! What a great video. That is the kind of interview I like; credible, historical, broad sweeping, complete, information packed, un-rushed, excellent questions... couldn't have been better! The footage that accompanied the audio was well selected.
    A+++

Completely agree and he was gracious and astute on Johnson sociologically but knew nothing of his pre-title competition .. putting that in for my pal McVey till he's back.

Thanks for the shout @he grant

I too found the Liston comments to be fascinating. And for what it's worth, I thought he broke down the Ali-Louis question in a way I strongly agree with. It was a very well articulated answer, and if memory serves, he perfectly summed it up saying Louis was the greatest heavyweight champion, and Ali was the greatest heavyweight. I happen to agree with his take here, so perhaps I'm biased.

I'm not saying he never went on record making these claims (as I don't know for certain off hand). But in all of the times I had the privilege of speaking with Emanuel, I never once got the impression that Steward "was never a fan of Ali". Quite the contrary, he often spoke about Ali with great esteem and admiration. And when I once specifically asked him about Ali vs Lennox, the big takeaway for me was that he said Lennox wouldn't have been intimidated by the Ali persona (both his strong personality, but also the loud and fired-up entourage that often surrounded him). Which is consistent with a point he always drove home, that Lennox was a lot tougher and more of a bully than his polite soft spoken demeanor otherwise suggested.

Yeah. If you listen to the enthusiasm of his answer here, you can hear the passion in his voice.
(Should start right before the point I'm referring to)

    In what sense?

This was the exact quote below. I didn't take it to mean he was saying Louis "avoided" movers. I interpreted that as Emanuel suggesting they'd take another route when the options permitted.

"The movement which Joe had problems with, even in a little small light heavyweight Billy Conn and Jersey Joe Walcott, those guys Joe always had problems with. I was fortunate enough to get to know one of his best friends who came from Detroit like I did, and he said Joe’s management always had to keep him away from boxers, people who could move, because Joe had problems with movers. But you know, he did what he had to do. He beat everybody of his era and held the title for so long and was a perfect gentleman when it comes down to what was required and necessary at that time."
