What classic fights have you seen that did nothing for you? I'll start. I've watched Johnny Tapia v Paulie Ayala 1 on more than one occasion and although it was clearly a very good, competitive fight, it simply didn't excite me.
Foreman vs Lyle- I know it is a classic...all I see is 2 poorly conditioned sluggers nearly falling down from exhaustion after 9 minutes of action. Lyle begins with a charging wide crude punch that misses so badly Cosell calls it amateurish lol, he crashes into the corner like a pro wrestler lol....I swear if a modern fighter did that we would never hear the end of it...all I hear is how skilled Lyle is and almost spit my coffee over myself in laughter. This is dreadful to me
Hagler - Hearns isn't all it's cracked up to be. It's great for about a minute but afterwards Hagler is just running down hill over Tommy. A great fight but not the greatest... or even that close.
Dempsey-Firpo, Marquez-Pacquiao IV & Chiquita-Carbajal I. Great if you like up and down, seesaw-type fights, but for me, fights like that lose some of their luster if you know the result. I'd rather something like Yuh-DeMarco, where it's non-stop clean punches and combinations. I prefer punch-a-thons/punch-'em-ups. On another note, I don't rate Gomez-Pintor as much as most do. Same again with Sanchez-Nelson.
Great fight also thanks to Cosell. The man Is a legend.. die-hard fan of Holmes and Forman..during that fight knocked out Norton worse than Foreman did by reminding him often in the commentary of the terrible knockout he received from B. George.
I'm with George. For 98 years now the public has been deceived, and we all grew up believing that it was one of the greatest fights of all time. While certainly better than an average fight, it was tbh, one of the biggest letdowns I ever got watching boxing.
I also like that you mention this one Seamus. I also concur that it was a very good fight, but after the initial round after we are all surprised out the furious pace at which these two came out to fight, after the repition of rounds 2 & 3, I soon became ready for new developments to occur, or better, a KO.
Patterson-Johansson Trilogy Mercer vs. Morrison Holyfield vs. Mercer I enjoy all of these as well, but I am not a radical fan of any of them like others are. Holyfield vs. Mercer in particular still left me confounded ("and wikipedia said this was a brawl?")
Canelo-Golovkin I & II were boring to me. The second was only not bad because it looked mildly entertaining compared to the first fight. I think Holmes-Norton gets somewhat overrated, though I do enjoy it. The last round probably elevated it to mythical levels of greatness.
If you take into consideration that Barrera was a big underdog going into that fight ....facing “ The next Julio Cesar Chavez “ ...that might be why it’s so fun to watch for people like me
Corrales-Castillo Take away round 10 and it's a good scrap but not the greatest fight of all time as some people would call it. It reminded me of a UK prizefighter tournament with tighter technique. I think it's mostly because it didn't seem like a lot of the punches hurt either fighter too badly which for me took away some of it's luster or maybe I'm just missing something
