Fights considered classics that leave you cold

Ali-Foreman. Foreman looks winded from round 2 on and Ali just lays on ropes.

 

Fights in general are just better watching when it actually happens because of the suspense factor. Almost everyone who I’ve spoken to who saw Hagler-Hearns live says it was amazing to watch. It was a highly anticipated bout between two ATGs and the first round was all out action. After you know the result, it’s easy to see how Hearns was getting steamrolled after the first round.

Leonard-Hearns 1 had a lot of lulls in action, particularly when Hearns was able to slow the pace in rounds 9-12. I’m sure that at the time, it was better to watch with the suspense factor, of seeing Hearns recover from the beating he took in rounds 6 and 7 to win those rounds.

Yeah, Holyfield-Tyson 1 definitely fits the category of being a great event/moment but not actually a great fight. It was still a good fight, but in no way deserving of winning the 1996 Fight of the Year over fights like Barrera-McKinney, Gatti-Rodriguez, or even Bowe-Golota 2. It had some good exchanges mixed in with a ton of clinching. But it was a big upset with an electric atmosphere.

 

I've never heard anyone say Canelo-GGG 1 & 2 were classics.

Julio Caeasar Chavez - Meldrick Taylor 1 for me was a letdown.

 

I mean, contextualize it. Imagine if what we got for Canelo-GGG I and II we got something like Hagler-Hearns. We would have been absolutely stunned and blown away.

What didn't you like about Pac-Marquez V? I thought that was a great fight with multiple knockdowns and the KO of the century.

Thrilla in Manilla. I know everyone loved this fight, but it just makes me sad seeing how much both declined since their first fight, which was undeniably their best and imo the greatest fight of all time, and has never been surpassed to this day.

 

Gomez vs Pintor. I think that brutality and entertaiment are overrated

 

In general, or for that fight?

 

Tyson vs Holyfield 1: Holyfield exhausts and breaks down Tyson mentally with hugs and headbutts. I feel like Holyfield’s performance foreshadowed what was to come in the heavyweight division. Guys jabbing and grabbing with more wrestling than boxing. Now I’m not saying that it is a bad fight, it just isn’t great. It’s just good. How this one won fight of the year is beyond me.

Salido vs Terdsak Koikygym: not really a well known classic, but I just found the frequency of the knockdowns to be almost cartoony for some reason. I just couldn't get into the fight.

Joe Frazier vs Jerry Quarry: a great first round, but as the fight goes on, it becomes more and more of a systematic beat down of Quarry which for me is kind of hard to watch knowing how Quarry wound up being after boxing. Also a lack of audio hurts this one in my eyes.

 

for that fight... IMO fairly average fight if you compare with even kitikasem - arbachakov. Let alone Erik Morales – Manny Pacquiao 1, Ruben Olivares – Kazuyoshi Kanazawa 2, Matthew Saad Muhammad - Marvin Johnson 1 and everything

 

I've said this so many times it's not funny. It's not the best fight of the 80's tbh.

 

Tua-Ibeabuchi. I respect the stamina and grit, but the rounds more or less blended together and looked the same without much drama.

Those are almost too much to keep up with. The more you watch the more you realize how damn good both guys were.

 

This thread is too painful to keep an eye on. It's like I'm accumulating arrows in my body.
